paul V Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Ls Recently I bought a book from a friendly fellow-member of this forum. It is a rather heavy book and UPS asks no less then $140 to send it from the U.S. to Europe. So I would like to ask for the best way to send such a book safe and not to expensive from the US to Europe. Regards; Paul Quote
Stephen Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 how heavy and where in Europe? Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Hi Paul, Having sent quite a few sword books from the US to Europe I can tell you that the post office is the best deal, by far. Check the prices for priority with insurance and for express with insurance; one or the other will be the best, and either will be way cheaper than Fedex or UPS. Grey Quote
bridgeofdreams Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Paul, Ditto to what Grey says, particularly if it is a heavy book that will fit in the Priority Mail Flat Rate Box (see usps.com for details) it should ship to anywhere in Europe for about $45, with Insurance available to most countries. Express Mail is a bit more, but offers full tracking and insurance. - Craig Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Hi again, One correction, Craig. Priority flat rate boxes can be insured within the US but not outside. If you want insurance you have to go with priority non flat rate or express. Grey Quote
bridgeofdreams Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 Grey, You're correct of course, I wasn't considering that as I use a 3rd party insurer for all my shipments, set up as a default option in my shipping software. It uses the declared value from the integral customs form. Craig Quote
paul V Posted November 18, 2010 Author Report Posted November 18, 2010 Good evening all Grey and Craig, thank you both for the input. Stephen, I don't know the books weight but it is the Teiryo yoji (9 x 12" and over 400pp), so it is rather heavy and it has to be sent to Belgium. I don't want to risk it gets lost so I do want an insurance. Regards; Paul Quote
Lindus Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 As you all know I am selling off my reference library, have run into a cost problem but should say that printed paper postage should not be a problem with any postal service, no customs problem and usually a cheaper rate but insured can add quite a bit. Always mark as "Book,Reference material, printed paper" and you should not have a problem. Roy Quote
