Guido Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Sorry, guys, I changed my e-mail settings/password etc. and hope it won't happen again. Quote
ububob Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I continue to be amused that people who go this kind of trouble, either scam or legit, don't bother to find someone who is fluent in the language they are choosing to use. Quote
jason_mazzy Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Happens to everyone. I use firewalls and filters, and all my passwords contain Upper lower, numbers and special characters, and recently someone still managed to steal my paypal info and drain my bank account. Quote
Guido Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I use firewalls and filters, and all my passwords contain Upper lower, numbers and special characters, ...I do the same, and this is the first time ever something like this happened to me. I talked to one of our IT guys, and he doesn't think it has anything to do with my pc - it's the server "they" hacked into. *edited to add* I checked out the link in the spam mail, and guess what: Mart-Free.Com offers by XiangFan ESC International Trade Co., Ltd.Mart-Free.Com is one of the biggest online commercial corporations in Asia, committing itself to build a worldwide wholesale shop online. Our company was originally set up in Xiangfan China in 2006, aiming to operate the business-to-customer transactions with overseas consumers. Our brand name was originated from imitating the gurgling voice people utter when enjoy something happy. Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Sorry, guys, I changed my e-mail settings/password etc. and hope it won't happen again. Sorry for the occurrence, Guido. E-mail address unchanged ? Quote
Guido Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 E-mail address unchanged ?Yup, same address as before.By now a few other of my colleagues had their e-mail accounts hacked, and some expats I know as well - seems the hackers are targeting foreigners in China ... Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I did wonder why you were trying to sell me cheap pc's... Quote
Nobody Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Sorry, guys, I changed my e-mail settings/password etc. and hope it won't happen again. I think that Guido is not responsible to this trouble. This kind of misrepresentation of someone’s email address is most likely caused on a PC when it is infected by the virus. The PC is not necessarily of Guido, but most likely of a person who has Guido’s email records and address in his/her PC. So generally, Guido cannot defend against this misrepresentation, unless he can find the friend whose PC may be infected. Such kind of virus appeared 6 or 7 years ago as far as I remember. BTW, my email address has been already misrepresented for several years. I am almost sure it was caused by one of NMB member’s PC. Quote
Brian Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Yep..Moriyama san is correct. This is common, and anyone can spoof someone's (or a random) email address with the right software. I don't even bother trying to find the source of the problem anymore..it happens to everyone. About once a year one of my email addresses gets used to send out spam, and everyone thinks it is me. It happens. Usually stops after a day or 3. And I can guarantee you..I have no viruses on my own machine, and no account of mine was hacked. They cycle through random email addresses, use "Spiders" to gather them from the net, or just get them from someone you know's pc. Nothing to worry about. Brian Quote
Guido Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I have no idea how they did it - my anti-virus and firewall software is top of the line, but a scan showed no infection. Same with the spyware scan I did. My computer is clean. But how did they get access to my "contacts" folder? The only explanation is that they hacked the mail server. Quote
Brian Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Guido, They didn't access your pc at all. Your email address is sitting on probably tens/hundreds of friends/colleage's computers who have been in touch with you at some point. One of them installs a small virus or picks up some spyware somewhere, which then accesses his contacts, and "spoofs" all of those email addresses as well as sends out emails to them all. Since you probably share a lot of contacts with others you know, that's why your contacts received the email in many cases. Simple, and your pc was never involved. I get emails from some of the members here that I know they have never sent. Brian Quote
Jamie Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I work in IT. Moriyama, and Brian are correct. Your email can be duplicated from any number of machines. Even if yours is clean. But if they got your contacts- I would venture to guess they got them from your mail server. Your contacts are probably on your machine, but some are also saved on the Mail server you use. That's more than likely where your contacts were obtained. This is not uncommon. Mostly it's just inconvenient. Quote
chi fan wong Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Yup, same address as before.By now a few other of my colleagues had their e-mail accounts hacked, and some expats I know as well - seems the hackers are targeting foreigners in China ... this happened to me as well and the invading ip was traced back to computer city in beijing. i called the number posted for the company and threatened to cut off someones legs at 7am their time, in mandarin, pretending to be an official... seriously though, did you log into your account through any other pc than your own at any time? because that could be one way for them to get your info. Ed Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Damn, Does that mean I will not be receiving the new home theater I ordered ?? Quote
reinhard Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Got some "irresistible" offers from Guido's mail account as well. Must be a Hotmail thing (no wonder). Get yourself a reasonable mail-account, Guido! BTW, it was a pleasure meeting you again at DTI. reinhard Quote
Jean Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 In fact this was a pleasure to meet you all there my friends, Guido, Robert, Henry and you Reinhard. My only regret is not too have been able to made a tour of the show with you as foreseen, Could not spot you but once in the morning and after we were off to NTHK 50th Birthday where I have seen probably the most impressive Nosada I will ever see. Take care all of you. For people interested, I confess that thanks to Reinhard, I was able to study in Hand my first Kiyomaro and that after DTI, I have succumbed to temptation and indulged in getting another sword but it will be another topic when I get it. The main drawback of DTI is that after seeing so many high ckass swords you cannot indulge anymore in low/medium swords collecting..... Quote
Henry Wilson Posted November 11, 2010 Report Posted November 11, 2010 Thank you Jean. It was a pleasure to finally meet you and Marc and chat. The DTI is a great yearly event that I always look forward to because I get to meet lots of like minded people and have a laugh as well as learn something new. Also I hope Reinhard got back safe with that lovely tsuba . Hope to see you all again next year. Quote
reinhard Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Also I hope Reinhard got back safe with that lovely tsuba . This is getting slightly off-topic, but so what. Don't worry, Henry, the tsuba arrived sound and safe at the other end of the world and you will be the first in line to be asked in case I will ever want to separate from it. BTW It made me reconsider the standing of Shonai Kinko compared to schools with higher reputation. It was a pleasure meeting you and other familiar faces at DTI again, as well as seeing the real faces behind the avatars of the French Connection (Jean & Jacques and some others). NMB as a virtual playground is quite nice, but it can't compete with real life. Wish to see you next year again reinhard aka Popeye Doyle Quote
Henry Wilson Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Thanks Reinhard If you can, could you post some colour pictures of it. I would love to see what I missed out on... Quote
Jacques Posted November 12, 2010 Report Posted November 12, 2010 Hi, The main drawback of DTI is that after seeing so many high ckass swords you cannot indulge anymore in low/medium swords collecting..... And the best was not showed at DTI, it remains hidden in some little shops Quote
reinhard Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 And the best was not showed at DTI, it remains hidden in some little shops What exactly do you mean by "the best"? I must admit "Dojigiri YASUTSUNA" and "Mikatsuki MUNECHIKA" were not for sale this year, but apart from national treasures on a Tenka Goken-level the selection of MeiTo at DTI was quite impressive, don't you think? I remember four top-class KIYOMARO blades and one of the most beautiful NAGAMITSU tachi (JuBi) at Eiwado's shop. Taibundo's swords were of no lesser qualities. I remember handling a very rare zaimei Ko-Aoe KORESUKE tachi with beautiful mei and one of the best Ayanokoji blades in existence there. Bob Hughes offered a beautiful Rai KUNITSUGU with outstanding koshirae. Not to speak of the marvellous top-class swords offered by Sokendo, Seikado, Seikeido...So what are you talking about exactly and which ones are these "little shops" you are talking about? True, not all treasures were displayed on tables at DTI, but compared to the level of most discussions on NMB and compared to sword-shows elsewhere, especially outside of Japan, DTI was and is a most impressive experience. reinhard Quote
Jean Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 DTI was and is a most impressive experience. I cannot comment on this as DTI is the only Nihonto fare I have ever attended, but taking into account what I have seen: Quite a few stalls were exhibiting only Juyo or Tokuju ..., there were Meibutsu (at least one). In concentration and number Reinhard is right. Due to my poor NMB participation, I had the privilege to handle early Kamakura blades, I have handled Robert's Kunitsugu at his stall and then again at his home with some other great blades, Koshirae and Kodogu, someone having seen me in the vicinity of Guido and Robert proposed me to examine a more than 800 year old blade... I have seen some fantastic swords in a small shop (they are often small but with a few floors) In one they had a jubi by Munemitsu/kagemitsu, an ubu Nagamitsu with nagamei and nengo, a Tokuju by Chogi, an Hosho utsushi by Naotane... incredible concentration but no more than 15 blades compared to DTI hundreds, and in DTI, in a stall (sorry for the names, I have seen too many blades) the saiha Sadamune retempered by Yasustsugu 1st Generation and its utsushi done by the same Yasutsugu.... No, DTI has no rivals in number of quality blades ... I have a meeting within an hour with our sword Club, I am going to be sad Quote
