Been there, I usually do the whole of Shinmonzendori antiques shops when I go to Kyoto. But done with it now. The shops all have a few assorted fittings, but generally prices are crazy..I mean really crazy. Kyoto isn't a good place to look for sword stuff. Tea taste doesn't go well with swords.

Tokyo is the place for that :) Wow..I miss it.

Hi Stephen

Well spotted, this is one of my favourite antiques shops in Kyoto or Japan for that matter. The lady that manages the shop is exceptionally patient with gaijin and welcomes us like old friends. I've bought my best Urushi mono pieces from her (in days of 250Y to the £) and always been delighted with the quality. On our last visit she unwrapped an edo period katana kake in immacuate condiiton - the price was a mere £7000.

I also bought a tsuka from her on my first visit 5 years ago, I think I posted the F/K for comments on the board a while back.

I'd recommend a visit to anyone staying in Kyoto but you will need the map/taxi it's easy to walk straight past the entrance.

Regards

Tony
