Know your Noh. Weekend reading.

Personally I love Noh. I compare it to watching a game of cricket on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I only attended one performance at the national noh theater or whatever it is called. I liked the kyogen much more and found that, myself included, most were sleeping halfway through the play....

Me think it needs an understanding and background many of the westerner (and possibly

many Japanese as well) greatly lack.

You can buy books that give explanations of the plots which makes the plays a lot more easy to understand.

I like Nô (much better than Kabuki), but I don't like Nô theaters. Nô plays should be watched on open air stages, preferably at night as Takigi-Nô ("bonfire Nô"). I attended my first Takigi-Nô at Hibiya park in 1988; one short visit to the National Nô Theater a few weeks later closed the chapter of watching it indoors for me.

 

My favorite play is Dôjôji.

Absolutely agree... with a couple of bottles of Imo Shochu too..... for medicinal purposes only, of course....
