pcfarrar Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 Hi, Can anyone tell me what the 2 kanji mean underneath the kiku mon on my kinmichi wak? I just cant figure them out. Thanks, Peter Quote
Nobody Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 The kanji are Jorai (除雷). That is a word of charm for avoiding a thunderbolt. Quote
k morita Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 This two Kanji is read as "kaminari-yoke". Quote
Nobody Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 This two Kanji is read as "kaminari-yoke". Yes, thank you. I also realize that just now. It must be read from right to left as 雷除. Quote
pcfarrar Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 Thanks! What does this actually mean, is the sword supposed to protect against lightning? Quote
Nobody Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 Ah IMHO, the people at that time surely did not like thunderbolts. They chiselled the word only as a charm against it, I think. p.s. I do not like it either. Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 Ah IMHO, the people at that time surely did not like thunderbolts. They chiselled the word only as a charm against it, I think. p.s. I do not like it either. Hehehe... It depends. In the Stibbert Museum, Florence, there is a sword attributed to Ietsugu, Chu-Aoe, around 1390 that is nicknamed "Kaminari" : Quote
pcfarrar Posted January 23, 2007 Author Report Posted January 23, 2007 I also found this one, that was forged 8 years before mine. Looks like the charm was quite common on Kinmichi swords. http://www.sho-shin.com/kintan.htm Quote
