Wickstrom Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 Need a bit of help translating this as i cannot read Japanese...yet. I believe this is an older blade, probably Sengoku. Still legible? Quote
Stephen Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 http://www.nihontocraft.com/Ura_Nihon_no_Toko.html look for Gassan Quote
Wickstrom Posted July 16, 2010 Author Report Posted July 16, 2010 Lol thanks all, I love how i look all day through kanji books and you guys can figuire it out by the time i refresh the page Quote
Mark Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 keep trying, it is the only way to learn. Grey Doffin sells a great set of Kanji flashcards i used to help me translate and learn the kanji. you might ask him about them. Quote
Wickstrom Posted July 17, 2010 Author Report Posted July 17, 2010 Thanks for the suggestion Mark, I might have to try that. I have been learning first-hand from a college student from Japan but i am still not so well on my reading... Quote
Jacques Posted July 17, 2010 Report Posted July 17, 2010 Hi, i've some doubts, can we see the whole blade, and some of hada and hamon in high resolution? Quote
Wickstrom Posted July 18, 2010 Author Report Posted July 18, 2010 Hi, i've some doubts, can we see the whole blade, and some of hada and hamon in high resolution? Sure, Minor pitting and maybe some grain openings? I'm still learning. I think its in great shape for being almost Nanbo. Quote
Wickstrom Posted July 21, 2010 Author Report Posted July 21, 2010 Anyone else want to throw in their .2 cents? It would be most appreciated. Hoping to make this my newest acquisition :D Arigato, Quote
Mark Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 shape of the blade suggests sue-koto. if it is just a bare blade you do not want to get too much invested as there are plenty of waks that are mounted and papered available on the market Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Minor pitting and maybe some grain openings? I'm still learning. It may just be the picture, but if the black specs are openings in the steel, I would steer well clear of this as this blade would be effectively asleep (worse than just tired IMHO). As Mark said, plenty of fish in the sea. Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Hello, SHINTETSU - Dark areas on the surface of the blade (ji or shinogi-ji) where the outer layer of steel has been removed and core steel shows through. This is normally a result of over polishing and indicates a "tired" blade. http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/kizu.htm Quote
Wickstrom Posted July 21, 2010 Author Report Posted July 21, 2010 Thank you all for your replies ^^ It may just be the picture, but if the black specs are openings in the steel, I would steer well clear of this as this blade would be effectively asleep (worse than just tired IMHO). As Mark said, plenty of fish in the sea. Thanks for the tip, ill stay clear of this sword. Quote
Wickstrom Posted July 23, 2010 Author Report Posted July 23, 2010 It was going at an extremely low price so i had to snag it. Blade comes with a new shira-saya and got it for well under $500.00 so its not setting me back too far even if it turns out to be asleep.. Quote
Jamie Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 In the pictures, it doesn't look like those are all openings. It looks like some of them are just stains. I don't think you did badly for under 500. Does it come in Shirasaya or just bare blade? Quote

I don't think you did badly for under 500.Does it come in Shirasaya or just bare blade? Yeah, it comes with a shirasaya that looks almost brand new to me. Only downside is the 3 weeks shipping from Japan ill lost a picture of the blade down here vv Quote
Wickstrom Posted August 23, 2010 Author Report Posted August 23, 2010 Sword Arrived today guys, turned out to be in a lot better condition then expected. no major flaws all those black spots were just very light pitting. I think it looks to be rather promising once i get a new polish for it. still haven't made a conclusion on what gassan this is apparently many signed with 2 characters... Quote
