It must have been wonderful to see some of these sights. I cherish a quotation from Algernon Mitford (Lord Redesdale) who was present when the last Shogun entered Osaka Castle for the final time. Mitford describes how the Shogun was accompanied by troops in modern uniforms carrying modern guns, but also notes that there were:

... warriors dressed in the old armour of the country, carrying spears, bows and arrows, falchions curiously shaped, with sword and dirk, who looked as if they had stepped out of some old pictures of the Genpei Wars in the Middle Ages. Their jinbaori, not unlike herald's tabards, were as many-coloured as Joseph's coat. Hideous masks of lacquer and iron, fringed with portentous whiskers and mustachios, crested helmets with wigs from which long streamers of horsehair floated to their waists, might strike terror into any enemy. They looked like the hobgoblins of a nightmare.

Edit I also found this about the same set of pictures : Caption: A staged version of the Japanese ritual suicide known as Seppuku or Hara-Kiri, circa 1885. The warrior in white plunges a knife into his belly, while his second stands behind him, ready to perform the decapitation. (Photo by Sean Sexton/Getty Images)

Steven, assuming that the picture is as old as it looks would a kai gunto have been made yet, whats the earliest that would have been?

I always love these old hand-colored photos. There are a couple of those firefighter's helmets similar to the ones in this picture for sale on ebay at the moment for a relatively low price if anyone is interested.

Moriyama san,

You have a great memory :)

I thought I recognized that photo. I wonder if anyone ever came up with his name?

Klaus, native american with a samurai sword?? Now thats a strange picture.

Maybe that Native American got it from a British trader coming to America. Or possibly bought it from a white officer (American,French?) coming back from Japan when they were helping Japan westernize their armies? It might seem a bit far fetched but how else does during this time period, something from one end of the world end up in the other part?
