cisco-san Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Dear all, I saw a very strange Nakago (see below). For me it seems repaired/welded...? What do you think? Many thanks. Quote
drbvac Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Strange indeed - almost looks like the blade had a very narrow nakago and then inserted into another and welded or something. No real idea for sure. Quote
jason_mazzy Posted June 3, 2010 Report Posted June 3, 2010 Definately looks like a repair. perhaps a blade with much value to the owner that had a nakago problem. Quote
lonely panet Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 it looks like its been welded. about 3 years ago i welded a longer nakago on to a hanwei practical katana to make it a nagmaki just for the fun of it, and it finished up looking simular, and to age it, I heated it till it was red hot and then quenched it a mud puddle to get a nice patina, and it worked some what. My thoughts are it may have been repaired after the war for a trophy for a US soldier. but its just a guess. Regards Hamish Quote
Justin Grant Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 Could be a bad gas welding job, but not a "wire" welding job. I would lean more towards a hammer weld or forging. My guess is a thin or broken nakago at one point. Quote
