Yesterday at our sword club meeting we had a kantei session with five blades. This was the first opportunity I had to put Paul Martin's book to use. We do a "team Kantei" where we divide up into two teams lead by more experienced collectors. We look ath the blades and discuss what we have seen and come to a concensus about each blade. Paul's book was of great help. I could show people the charts showing the shape of blades and when we decided on period and school we could look for likely candidate smiths. All in all it was put to good use. I also gave a little talk on the book to members. Below is what Jean wrote in a different thread on the book.

" Paul Martin has written a little booklet "Nyusatsu Kantei" I encourage you to get it (12$+shipping - it is a steal considering the amount of information available in this small booklet)

Here is an extract :

9. Genroku Era (1688-1704)

In contrast with Kanbun era blades, wakizashi from this era have a magnificient deep sori, a wide mihaba, and a slightly extended chu-kissaki. They are 1 shaku 8 sun (54.5 cm) and over in length.

Could be ....

Got my NCJSC newsletter a few days ago, and was pretty amazed that this book was included as a gift to the members.

I already have a copy, but that is a really good gift to be giving away. If you don't have one, I do suggest you get a copy. Handy size to carry around with you too.

Is there a link to the site were you can purchase the book?

Thank you all for your kind words. Just to let you all know it is also available in French (courtesy of Jean), Italian (courtesy of Carlo), and Russian (courtesy of Stan). Apparently my site doesn't work on everyones browser, so please bare with me for the time being, I am trying to get it up to speed. If you can't get the site or paypal button to work, please contact me through here or through the site contact page, or facebook, etc, etc. I do my utmost these days not to give anything away to spammers.

Also, I know it has already been mentioned, but another book by Kodansha is available by pre-order from Amazon, but will be in major book stores in the not too distant future. I highly recommend this book (not because I translated and adapted it), because it was highly educational to produce. It goes into detail on what most sword books take for granted or skip over.

Hi Paul:

I hope that those orders continue to pour in! We need more translations and more publications on swords. One of the things that the JSSUS does well is to arrange for the translation of good material on swords.

Unfortunately when we recently asked for a request for proposals we did not get any. SOOO if you have some time and inclination to do some work paid for the JSSUS please let me or Grey Doffin know.

Members of the board I urge you to buy Paul's book, to support his work and to encourage others to step forward to also produce material all of us can use. It is only $12 and one can use Paypal..... :D

Paul's website isn't displayed properly in Firefox. The left frame content is aligned too low where most of the links are cut off and unviewable to Firefox running at 800 pixels or less in vertical resolution. However under Safari, it looks fine.

If you are coming to the Midwest Token Kai this coming weekend, I have plenty of copies available - English only - that I will be selling for Paul.

Plus another 500 or so assorted books from my inventory. Do stop and introduce yourself if we've not met before - why don't they ever have name tags for non-exhibitors at sword shows?

Barry,

You know by now that I always have special deals for NMB members, old friends, new friends, etc.

I will have a fair number of books not on my website, and other odds and ends.

As far as Paul's book goes, he's really not making any money on it as it is, and he probably should have put a higher price on it - but I admire his dedication to spreading knowledge and support him fully in that.

Hi Craig:

I was not expecting a discount on a $12 book. I was trying to drum up some business for you. You know that the the first thing I buy at all shows is books! In case I don't buy a sword or fitting at least I can learn something.

Barry,

I know you were not looking for a deal on a $12 book, but I should have pointed out that the offer I made here earlier in the month - pick the book or books you want and I'll make you the same deal I would in person at the show - which a number of MessageBoarders have taken advantage of - applies at the show as well.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love selling books and making deals, and I'm not one of those "that's the price, period" booksellers.

Plus at the show I offer one invaluable service: I take credit cards (or PayPal) at the show, so you can conserve your cash resources for where they are needed!

See you tomorrow!

Safe travels,

Craig
