Jason, to me the tang looks quite old, but obviously the seller has no idea of how to present a sword in order to sell it, there are no close up pictures of the blade.... Quote
moss Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 Jason, Keep you eyes on the "For Sale" section on the board . You will find some pretty decent blades posted from time to time, and you won't have the potential victims of auction fever breathing down your neck. What is your budget? Maybe post a wanted? Just my 2 cents worth of advice ,Ebay can be dangerous to your wallet, you have to be able to take the hit of a total loss. Cheers and goodluck Moss Quote

Were else can you get an education and a neat tool for a few measly dollars. Quote
moss Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 Yeah Eric , Guess you could use one for that, but with the popularity of email you will go through a few $ in screens  Moss Quote
sanjuro Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 Jason. Ebay is not a good source of reliable quality blades particularly for those new to Nihonto. The guys on the board (myself included sometimes) may treat this with a certain light hearted humour, but at the core of it there lies the knowledge of the dangers to the unwary and a dire warning to the effect that unless you know exactly what you are looking at, and exactly what you are looking for, you can suffer a significant financial penalty and have nothing to show for it and very little if any recourse against the seller if you get taken for a ride. It isnt worth the potential pain. Patience is most definately a virtue when it comes to the acquisition of a decent sword. We all know the "I just gotta get a sword" feeling, and the rush to satisfy it can lead to nasty dissappointment. Buy through a reliable source and/or a reputable dealer, or a member of this board by all means. These are people who value their good name and reputation above all. Sorry ..... I dont mean to preach, but I would hate to see another enthusiast taken for a ride that turned him away in dissappointment from Nihonto. Quote
raven2 Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 Jason, I am going to have to agree with everybody else here. You ask about buried treasure. Your description is apt. You probably have about the same chance of finding a buried treasure as getting something good off of Ebay. Much better to look at the for sale area here if you have no other recourse. You will find good offers and some decent blades. Even better, would be to go a show so you can see the blades in hand and talk to people. The Midwest Token Kai is coming up and perhaps you could go to it. Quote
jason_mazzy Posted April 9, 2010 Author Report Posted April 9, 2010 Thank you guys. I love the honesty, i appreciate it. You all know my pain lol. But there are a couple ppl here that I will be talking to. I would like to post one more blade that is going to run away from me, but I believe you guys may see something in it. Please all look and tell me what you see. Isee a hand forged ancestral blade in gunta: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :MEBIDX:IT iem#: 260582884170 appears to kave kissaki, boshi and hamon. Quote
Mark Green Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 I would want good pics of the Nakago. Looks real enough, but looks like it has been buffed or something. If you get pics of the Nakago, send them on to us. If he won't send you any, stay away!!!! Mark G Quote

Jason, once again you have a seller who does not know how to present a sword for sale, no pictures of the tang, also you did not mention if you can see any hada, the seller makes no claim as to the type of blade it is. jason_mazzy Posted April 10, 2010 Author Report Posted April 10, 2010 Seeing as the man is supposedely in his late 80's and picked it off the beach himself, I would bet its why he doesnt know how to show the sword. I think its just a family who wants to sell off his stuff and put the money towards his debts. I just thought any of you ppl who had more money than me, might be willing to look at it, and take a chance. Hell I'm 1/2 tempted to drive the 9 hours to see it in person and take pics just to show you guys. Quote

Jason. something I would suggest would be to make yourself a couple of searches in the antique and collectible categories on ebay such as ww2 Japanese sword, shin gunto, Japanese sword, etc and save them, then put every sword you thing looks good or interesting to you on your watched items list. Keep track of them and see how they are being bid on and the final sales price, this will help give you an idea of the current market value and it will test you own knowledge as well. You will begin to see which sellers carry good swords to. I do this all the time and its a very interesting way to see were the markets at and how good you are at spotting good swords....or at least swords that a lot of people think are good! Quote
