Rrtaylor20 Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 Hi. I would like some help identifying this katana and determining around when it was made and if it was handmade. I received this from an elderly lady who said her husband was an audience pilot in WW2 and he got it in Japan. Here are some pics. Would love any insight anyone has. Quote
nulldevice Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 Google translate says: Quote Shimozu, Inawawa Town, Nakajima County, Aichi Prefecture 72 Higashi Shinmachi Tokubei Ito Nihonto (Koto) [Japanese sword {old sword}] IDK that I agree with the last part about it being a koto sword. The tang looks like a much more modern sword and not a pre 1600s sword. I'll let others chime in regarding the rest of the translation on the wooden tag. IDK how accurate it is other than the last part. Quote
Nobody Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 Address and name on the tag,
goo Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 Does the address tag imply whoever surrendered it was hoping to get it back one day? Quote

I believe that it simply indicates that the owner had complied with the surrender requirements. It does sound like the possible beginning of an exciting adventure to return the sword to the family of the original owner, though :-) Quote
Rrtaylor20 Posted April 10 Author Report Posted April 10 Wow thanks so much for the information. So does it look like it was a military issue? I have been researching those online and haven't seen one that looks like this one. I was not sure if the name on the tag was the person who made it and was selling it at a market or something but with you all saying it has an address on it as well that makes me second guess that. Anyone have thoughts on if this is handmade or any idea when it would have been made? Quote

The blade itself is not necessarily military issue. Individual officers did use family swords, often in military koshirae, which this is not. But as well lots of blades were surrendered which had not been used by an officer, but were simply family blades. Quote
Franco Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 Looks like a WWI era sword. Koto ... hmm, perhaps in someone's dreams. 1 Quote
