CNS_44 Posted March 30 Report Posted March 30 Hello, I recently picked up a tanto and don't know very much about it. All I know was that it came from an antique market in kyoto. Any information on whether or not this tanto is genuine or fake would be greatly appreciated and also what era it could be from if its genuine. All the pictures are uploaded on this google doc here because I was not able to attach the images directly to this post. Thanks https://docs.google.com/document/d/18nBqNpXkCD0JOd723veEciAx8nO5BmA9o7S_uOmSkT8/edit?usp=sharing Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 31 Report Posted March 31 The nakago is way too long. Possibly a remnant of a broken longer sword. Study first; buy later. Or, at least, buy only from a trusted source. Grey Quote
CNS_44 Posted March 31 Author Report Posted March 31 Ok thanks for the information. In your opinion would you think that this is a antique nihonto or some modern reproduction? Quote
Brian Posted March 31 Report Posted March 31 To me, looks genuine but the front part of a longer broken blade, reshaped. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted March 31 Report Posted March 31 The HAMON follows the outline nicely; the front end does not look like reshaped to me. If it was made from a broken blade, I think it was a HIRAZUKURI one before. The long NAKAGO makes it look unbalanced as mentioned before. The pictures are not good enough for me to make a statement concerning the age, but the NAKAGO seems to have no patina, so this might indeed be an indication for a recent modification of an originally longer blade. CNS_44 Posted April 1 Author Report Posted April 1 Ok do you have any suggestions on pictures I should take so that you may be able to determine the age? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 1 Report Posted April 1 If you crop your photos you should be able to post them here. Quote
