Bruce Pennington Posted March 31 Report Posted March 31 Steve, You might already know, but the blue/brown tassel was used by Company grade officers - Capt's and Lt's - as well as the equivalent grade Gunzoku personnel (civilian force working for the military). I've attempted to enhance, a bit, the mei. Maybe someone can make it out. You might need to take some more shots with lighting/shadows that enhance the writing 1 Quote
Dogditcher Posted March 31 Author Report Posted March 31 Thank you-will try and get better shots when i'm there here are 2 i already had-I have no knowledge in Japanese Sword history but this sure gives me a very old blade vibe. Here a few from other day Quote
Peter Bleed Posted Monday at 09:29 PM Report Posted Monday at 09:29 PM I think this signature opens with "Bishu..." That opening, together with the shape of the nakago, suggests that the blade was make in Bizen, probably in the late 1500s. Peter 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted Tuesday at 08:20 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 08:20 AM Someone tried to "clean" the NAKAGO for a better view of the signature which is a very bad idea. In this special case, it is probably no additional devaluation.... Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted Tuesday at 08:53 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 08:53 AM Did we not see this same set with that bullet hole about ten or fifteen years ago here? Steve, thanks but those shots are now too close! Can you take a couple of Mei overall shots from different angles with differing light and shadows? Likely it says 備州長船住?... but then more faintly... 直 or 道?正?作 Quote
Stephen Posted Tuesday at 11:50 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 11:50 AM Been a few years well actually more on eBay Bullet Hole sword brought triple the amount of money that would it normally would have had. Collectors do love battle proven swords and all the gore that goes with it Quote
Dogditcher Posted Tuesday at 08:28 PM Author Report Posted Tuesday at 08:28 PM Had a chance to take better pictures - A little more info- Sword has been in possession for over 30+ years and the NAKAGO was never cleaned during that time. It measures 27" and tassel/knot was added . Thanks everyone for their input -It blows my mind if it is truly from the 1500's I do have a few more swords to inquire about at a later time 2 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted Wednesday at 05:22 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 05:22 AM 備州三原住貝正近作 Bishu Mihara Ju Kai Masachika Saku Muromachii/Momoyama Period (?) Much better shots, thanks! 1 1 Quote
Lewis B Posted Wednesday at 07:14 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 07:14 AM MASACHIKA (正近), Eiroku (永禄, 1558-1570), Bingo – “Bishū Mihara-jū Kai Masachika saku” (備州三原住貝 正近作), “Bishū Mihara-jūnin Kai Masachika saku” (備州三原住人貝正近作), “Bishū Mihara-jū Kai Masachika taishoku jōgo ō-mochi-kurai shikaredomo kaji heta nari” (備州三原住貝正近大食上戸大餅喰然共 鍛冶下手也, “bad work of Kai Masachika from Bingo´s Mihara because made full of food”), this joking signature is found on the most famous masterwork of Masachika, the saying taishoku jōgo ō-mochi kurai applies to someone who is already full of food and sake but who still eats a dessert in the form of a mochi Seems like he had a big sense of humour. 1 1 Quote
