Curious what is the item hanging on Tsuba. I didn't pay much attention to them when

i was oiling the sword but now as I look at pictures it has me wondering . I do remember

thinking that they were heavy for being so small-Owner had it recorded as

Officers sword Leather Scabbard  -Thanks

Based upon the bottom half of a snap fastener on the scabbard's leather combat cover, I think the hilt had some sort of leather strap for retaining the scabbard.  Two different kinds come to mind, one that was a sort of leather seppa with strap while the second one wrapped around the fuchi.  Both kinds then passed passed through the crossguard and snapped onto the scabbard.

Steve,

Forgive me, but while your question is definitely interesting (I have never seen anything like this), I'm dying to know that the translation is on the paper (asuming it is the nakago) and hoping to get a shot of the tsuba.

I think it says: Noshu Kanetoshi Saku

Looks like a small braided strap affixed to a brass loop that has three braided strings to three braided orbs. I have also never seen anything like it, and I imagine it will be tricky to identify

How strange!
