Hello,

I’m a new member of NMB which is an outstanding place for nihonto lovers. Thank you for accepting me, and thank you to all precious members of the board.

My last purchase at auction in Paris, two years ago, is a nihonto in great condition. Nagasa: 66 cm, Sugata: shinogi zukuri, iori mune, Hada: masame, Hamon: sanbonsuji.

It was in Shirasaya. A french craftsman (NBTHK member) made a nice Koshirae with Edo parts.

The signature is «Hoki no kami Fujiwara Nobutaka». If authentic, it is certainly one of the first five generations of Nobutaka swordsmiths, given that only the first five signed «Hoki no kami», but it could be Gimei.

Thanks to more experienced members for enlightening me on this subject.

I'd say gimei for the 1,2,3 and 5 generation, I don't have any example of the yondai. As for the tsuka ito, I've seen better.

Ps NBTHK membership has never been a guarantee of quality.

Is there one specific feature of the nakago you are seeing which leads you to gimei or is it a combination?

From what I see I agree with Jacques, nakago and yasurime match for me but the mei seems to have several inconsistencies with 1,2,3, 5 gen. (I would exclude shodai in any case because used ha - agari finish) however I would like to see the blade to verify if there is coherence.

The engraving style is totally different from that used by the Nobutaka family

Thank you for your answers (and questions!)

The fact that the engraving style is quite different from what I have been able to see so far leads me to assume it's Gimei, Shinshinto.

In a few days, a highly regarded french expert will give me his opinion.

I intend to have the blade repolished traditionally, if it is worth it and the cost.

I will try to make good photos of the blade (not so easy for an amateur) and will post them on the board.
