John C Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 Hello: I know there has been a lot of discussion on yari blade shape, however I was curious about the effectiveness of this style. Was this made in this shape? It seems to me that this shape would not be a very effective stabbing weapon, but rather a slashing weapon. Is that the case or could this blade have been "pointy" once and re-worked? John C. Quote
Yumso Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 They used it more like hitting rather than slashing or stabbing. 1 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 There were recognized blade shapes, and this seems to be one of them. Aesthetically pleasing I agree, but spears often lost their tips and your type would be less likely to do so. Besides, I cannot forget what one old Japanese told me; spears only needed to strike an enemy in the eye, the softest and most undefended part of an armoured opponent. Hit their eye and they’re out of the fight… For this reason a small simple blade was sufficient. 1 1 Quote
Bazza Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 The 'blunt' shape suggests to me an armour-piercing style?? BaZZa 1 Quote
Bazza Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Moriyama san, thank you so much for this ref. A great service bringing an old (hardly necro!!) post to augment a current post. Thank you too to Piers san for the original 2014 post, which I seem to have missed. I would have given it a 'LOVE' emoji at the time. BaZZa. 1 Quote
