Richard K Posted March 9 Report Posted March 9 Newbie 1st post, I'm in need of some expert opinions and input regarding a gunto and a wakizashi I received as a payment for some work I did back in 1982 I never had it evaluated back then just happy to have it but now after over 40 years it looks like I need to sell them and some other items to make room for a smaller place. The gunto information that I know now is something I learned from this site in the past 3 month that this being a Takayama to and reading the article about Masakichi (Masayoshi ?) Takayama story and also because of it the gunto is sought after by militaria collectors, the wakizashi is a mumei and I don't have much information other than what I was told by another source a source that I contacted before I discovered you folks at NMB, "Katana is from WW2 with a civilian koshirae estimate; 800-1200, the wakizashi from Koto period and might be quite good but unpolish estimate; 500-700. I realize both items in rather rough shape like the gunto not in the original koshirae condition and the wakizashi with no mei, any thought or opinion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my poor writing. Richard K Quote
Mark S. Posted March 9 Report Posted March 9 Have you considered bringing them to the Chicago Sword Show for some in-person evaluations? Show is end of April in Schaumburg. I am local to the show and you if you have more questions or need help. Both really need to be seen in hand as the pics don’t tell much. The kissaki on the katana gives me pause and the tsuka wrap is very ‘off’. Quote
Richard K Posted March 9 Author Report Posted March 9 Yes I plan to if I still have them on Sunday 4/27. Richard K Quote
Tohagi Posted March 10 Report Posted March 10 The wakasashi could really be good! Please show it to some member here. The prices they gived you are fair, but à little under if the gunto is genuine and the waki as it seems. Best regards, Eric Quote
Rivkin Posted March 10 Report Posted March 10 Nakago photograph, boshi, some macro shots and there is a good chance we can form a decent opinion re what it is. As of now the waki looks like possibly late Muromachi example (deep sori, hirazukuri), but I am also interested in katana - there is some potential here. Quote
Richard K Posted March 10 Author Report Posted March 10 Thank you both for the encouragement, will add more photos later this pm. Richard K Quote
