estcrh Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Is there anyone who translates mei for for a fee, I know several people who would rather pay someone for their time than to ask someone to do it for free.
Bugyotsuji Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Eric, it would be too complicated to do that here. If you want a professional reading, then you could ask elsewhere for that, perhaps at the Kantei/Shinsa. Here people are eager to attempt the readings, and to help newcomers to start to be able to do it themselves. That is why the spoiler window is often used. Think of it as a sort of game.

What I meant was, is there someone who does this, professionally, not necessarily here, just in general, someone asked me and I never heard of this type of service but that does not mean it does not exist. Well Im sure someone here will know if there is.
Brian Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 It's done here, and for free. (I am sure you have noted this in the past) I haven't heard of anyone not getting a translation when asked politely. At least when it isn't in large volumes and for commerical gain..which I am sure it isn't? Let them ask away... Brian

Brian Yes of course, and I myself have asked once for help and received it for a sword of mine which I appreciated but what I was asking about was if there was a commercial service that translates mei. I have never heard of one, but some people would rather pay for services, and for someone who is looking to purchase a sword lets say and wants to verify the sellers translation independently and would just like to send a picture of the mei and pay for a translation is there such a service? Has anyone heard of this being done?
b.hennick Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Harry Watson does translation for a living. He has for example translated juyo papers for a fee. He would be happy to accept a fee I am sure. He also does "quick translations" for free. If someone had a lot of translating work to be done he would be agood choice.
John A Stuart Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Why would a collector not even try to learn how to read a signature himself? That is part of the joy of collecting. Researching the history of what he/ she has. There are many resources to achieve this. I can understand asking for help on forums like this if a new collector or if the signature is complex. Fellows like Morita and Moriyama san are as good as it gets and for serious inquiries, not vetting sales or abetting them. When matters of money are brought to this board, other than the 'sales' section, I shudder at the crassness of it. A place of learning not a commercial clearing house. John

John John, I do not understand your attitude, my question has nothing to do with matters of money or sales and there is NOTHING crass about it, I asked a simple question, there is NOTHING crass about someone wanting to have a mei checked and not wanting to do it themselves, your horse is rather high, that may be part of the joy to you but not to someone else, to each his own. Some people would rather not impose on other people and do not mind paying for services rendered, you do not understand that? "a place of learning and not a commercial clearing house" WOW.....sounds like your worshiping in church! You are a rude individual

Barry, thanks for the information, that was just what I was looking for. How would someone contact him if they were interested in his services?
Brian Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Eric, Why does controversy seem to follow you around this forum? I can assure you, John is neither rude nor far off base. Your entire request seems to have a veiled hinted suggestion, or ulterior motive. Can you show me some of these people that would rather pay for a translation that get one for free if asked for? If these people wish to pay for translations, I would be very happy if anyone was to ask Moriyama san or Morita san or Markus or any of the other "genius" translators we have here, for help..and them make a small donation to them directly as a thanks. I know they might not accept it, but we all owe them far more than that. Make no mistake...this is probably the best place on the entire internet to ask for translations of sword related stuff. Sometimes abused, yes...but by far the best. So if these people need simple translations, they can post them here (best to advertise their intentions to be polite) or pm one of the experts in private, or contact Harry at http://pages.suddenlink.net/afuresearch/afu/ I am sure any of these will accept payment if requested to. 'Nuff of this one too..and if I have to lock more threads anytime soon, it won't be good. Brian
