Davis Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 This plaque was recently sold at auction. I have several similar but know very little about them and would like to learn more. I guess this type of plaque was exported in large numbers from Japan during the early part of the 20th century. The seals on this one might read Naito but that too is just guesswork. I would particularly like to see other examples that members might have or know of. Sometimes retailers labels can be found on the reverse, does anyone have an example? Can anyone help, all information welcome. Thanks. 1 Quote
Matsunoki Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 These plaques are Meiji period and yes, they were made in large numbers aimed at the gaijin/export market. Your is most likely one of a pair (usually sold in pairs) as suggested by the figures both looking one way. It’s pair would show whatever it was they were looking at.. The one shown is of good quality The carving in the figures (Ivory or bone) is highly detailed. Many are surprisingly low quality made quickly whilst some are truly stunning…..this one looks to have all its inlay….often areas fall out and are a sod to restore. You will find quite a few in this link…. https://www.bonhams....uery=Shibayama+panel 2 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 Mick, there is one NAITO to be seen on the BONHAM's page provided by Colin. 1 Quote
Davis Posted February 20 Author Report Posted February 20 Thanks Colin and Jean for your replies. Colin you are spot on, it is one of a pair I have the other. Unfortunately I left a bid on this one but didn't manage to get it. Thanks also for the link I hadn't thought of looking there. With commission this one went for just under £600. "Naito" seems to be a rather good artist but have often wondered if he did all the work on these pieces or just carved the faces. Quote

Expand I believe all of these were made in a”studio” environment where many artists collaborated but it is reasonable to think that there were specialists….maybe on faces especially. I don’t think just one artist made each panel. 1 Quote
Davis Posted February 21 Author Report Posted February 21 My thoughts too. Unfortunately there are no sources that I know of that can be referred to, judging by the large numbers that come to auction there must be thousands in the UK. As you say many have suffered losses. Subjects featuring Intact samurai and arms and armour are not so common. Quote
