Bruce Pennington Posted February 18 Report Posted February 18 Hey guys! Friend of my has this one from his grandpa. Mumei, looks old. Can you give us some idea what he's got? Nagasa is 27" (Ignore the stone it's laying on, I told him about that issue):: Quote

Rivkin Posted February 18 Report Posted February 18 Yes, sugata wise very close to Kambun... I would check if boshi is sugu for confirmation. Quote
Jacques Posted February 18 Report Posted February 18 I can't read chicken entrails, without measures (sori, motohaba, sakihaba, kasane), I can't say anything. Quote
Stephen Posted February 18 Report Posted February 18 Grandma used to always say "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" 3 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 19 Author Report Posted February 19 Thanks guys! I'd say he's happy with David's idea. He doesn't know anything about swords and is just happy to know it's old. It was in leather saya, but the tsuka was reduced to same' only, no metal fittings, no ito. So, I'm walking him through ideas on how to retro-fit the tsuka to something he would like. 1 Quote
Tohagi Posted February 22 Report Posted February 22 Without that last post, I would think at a zatoïchi blade. (Hided in a march stick of course!)... 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 22 Author Report Posted February 22 I noticed how straight it was with very little sori. Quote
Tohagi Posted February 24 Report Posted February 24 27'' is not zatoïchi ....very straight sory, kabun shinto or momoyama tensho seems and educated guess Quote

Stephen Posted February 24 Report Posted February 24 Coming from the most sarcastic member we have that's pretty rich. If your grandmother never said that well that explains a lot Quote
Jacques Posted February 24 Report Posted February 24 My grandmother, who was a psychiatrist, used to say to me: “Don't listen to what most people say, it's often nonsense”. Quote

Geraint Posted February 25 Report Posted February 25 Aaaannndd back to the sword! First picture seems to show a forward stoop from the monuchi, as though is has been struck against something pretty solid. Just the photograph? Or possibly just my eyes. All the best. 5 Quote

These are the only photos I have, so hard to say. Looking at the enlarged one below, I'd say it was just illusion from the photo angle. Quote

There's a big difference between listening to a patient suffering from illness and listening to the bullshit spouted at the local bar. In any case, thank you for showing me that she was right. Quote

jsv Posted February 25 Report Posted February 25 Tell him to take better photos and remove the habaki. Quote
Tohagi Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 The shape of the Shinshinto Masakuni sword spotted by Jacques is very close. By the way, anytime I'd mention "patriotic blades" (Kinnoto if I am right?) In Japan, I've got a strange reaction back from the nihonto community. Is that because it is irrelevant? Rude? Or just politicaly touchy? Did you had such experiences? Kind regards, Eric Quote

Jacques Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 I don't care, I'm not a psychiatrist and reading your nonsense is enough for me. Quote
Matsunoki Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 I have no idea why @Jacques is comparing the sugata of an ubu sword to another that clearly appears to be suriage and possibly o-suriage. That is nonsensical. Quote
Jacques Posted February 26 Report Posted February 26 Quote that clearly appears to be suriage and possibly o-suriage. I would like to know your method for determining whether this sword is suriage or not? I'll reassure you right away that the number of mekugi ana doesn't enter into the equation. Quote
reinhard Posted Thursday at 01:06 AM Report Posted Thursday at 01:06 AM There is something wrong with the sori (curvature) of the blade. The monouchi-area seems to bow down. This indicates a retempering of the upper part of the blade. Close expertise (in hand) could solve this question. reinhard 1 1 Quote

It’s bloody clear to me ……maybe you need glasses. Jacques, you make yourself look a complete idiot and please don’t call me dishonest because I am not. You are now directly calling me incompetent and dishonest. Is that the limit of your massive scientific intelligence? 1 Quote
