Thanks guys!  I'd say he's happy with David's idea.  He doesn't know anything about swords and is just happy to know it's old.  It was in leather saya, but the tsuka was reduced to same' only, no metal fittings, no ito.  So, I'm walking him through ideas on how to retro-fit the tsuka to something he would like.

Let your sarcasm aside, if you can guess the age of a sword without the measurements, you'll have to teach the method to the experts at NBTHK.

Aaaannndd back to the sword!  First picture seems to show a forward stoop from the monuchi, as though is has been struck against something pretty solid.  Just the photograph?  Or possibly just my eyes. :)

All the best.

My grandmother, who was a psychiatrist, used to say to me: “Don't listen to what most people say, it's often nonsense”.

A psychiatrist who doesn’t listen to people…   Never thought they were very useful anyway.

These are the only photos I have, so hard to say.  Looking at the enlarged one below, I'd say it was just illusion from the photo angle.

There's a big difference between listening to a patient suffering from illness and listening to the bullshit spouted at the local bar. In any case, thank you for showing me that she was right.

It's not kanbun the sugata doesn't match, but it's typical of what could be done in Meiji.

The shape of the Shinshinto Masakuni sword spotted by Jacques is very close.

By the way, anytime I'd mention "patriotic blades" (Kinnoto if I am right?) In Japan, I've got a strange reaction back from the nihonto community.

Is that because it is irrelevant? Rude? Or just politicaly touchy?

Did you had such experiences?

Kind regards,

I have no idea why @Jacques is comparing the  sugata  of an ubu sword to another that clearly appears to be suriage and possibly o-suriage. That is nonsensical.

I would like to know your method for determining whether this sword is suriage or not? I'll reassure you right away that the number of mekugi ana doesn't enter into the equation.

There is something wrong with the sori (curvature) of the blade.

The monouchi-area seems to bow down.

This indicates a retempering of the upper part of the blade.

Close expertise (in hand) could solve this question.

What is the difference between clearly appears and appears in these images? It’s bloody clear to me ……maybe you need glasses.

Jacques, you make yourself look a complete idiot and please don’t call me dishonest because I am not.
You are now directly calling me incompetent and dishonest.

Is that the limit of your massive scientific intelligence?
