Swords Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Hi I can use some help with the translation It should have a name and date Thanks in advance Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 You got it. Bishu ju Sukenobu December 1944 No star or stamps? Quote
Conway S Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Steve, This sword was discussed on the forum in December. I wouldn't trust that it's a "gendaito" just because the seller states that. Many of these RJT smiths also made non-traditionally made swords as well. 1 Quote
Swords Posted February 3 Author Report Posted February 3 Well I might as well show the sword I hate pointing fingers at sellers too late I thought 1595 was a good price? To me the hamon or hada looks traditionally made I would rather have the darker brown Tsuka But now what I hear from others makes from me think twice Thanks for all comments Quote
Brian Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 You know that to find a Gendaito in those mounts is extremely rare? So much so, you can just about assume it's a Showato. That is, until proven otherwise, but I'd be surprised. 1 Quote
John C Posted February 3 Report Posted February 3 Steve: I find his prices to be a little high. And I think he is using the word gendaito in its literal sense (present day sword). There is no star stamp, made in 1944, I would assume showato. https://www.ebay.com/itm/405311634756? He is also selling a Kanenobu star stamped gendaito for twice that price - again, too high. But if he thought the Sukenobu was a true gendaito, he would probably ask for more. Just my two cents. John C. 1 Quote
Swords Posted February 3 Author Report Posted February 3 Interesting comments and thanks to all. The hada threw me off I don’t see the dark lines associated with a non traditional sword Also no arsenal Stamp that I can see I did see the same one shown in December Quote

True for the steel saya, light tan, but these darker tan with double chuso release buttons do come with gendaito. I own one with a star-stamped blade. 1 Quote
vajo Posted February 4 Report Posted February 4 With some fantasy i could imagine that there is a star stamp to see. Ask him for better pictures Did you see it? 2 Quote
Swords Posted February 4 Author Report Posted February 4 Interesting I will ask him I also asked if it was hand made folded and he said it was so now I’m really confused as to why he would lie about it? Dose anyone know about him or done business Steve Quote
Brian Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 Am I wrong that the start stamp is usually top left, not right? Also, the seller likely doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Not a lie...just not aware of the difference maybe. 2 1 Quote
george trotter Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 Just to help out on the question of the light tan coloured steel scabbard Rinji Seishiki Gunto being found with star stamped blades....here is a photo of one I have. The bottom sword has two chuso buttons and holds the star stamped 62 cm blade by Seki Kanehide dated May 1944. I have seen a few of these mounts with star stamped blades over the years...not common, but there are a number around. Those that I have seen are all two chuso button types. Hope this helps. Regards... 2 1 Quote
Swords Posted February 5 Author Report Posted February 5 Thanks for the help guys I did asked about the star which isn’t one. I’m still sitting on the fence being traditional and making claims as such But I have to believe others on the forum who are more knowledgeable than I Is the lighter tan medal Tsuka not as sought after than the darker wood taped ? And Is this another indicator its not traditionally made Steve Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted February 5 Report Posted February 5 Steven, As discussed above, I have only seen gendaito in the Rinji mounts having 2 chuso buttons. I know - never say never and always, with WWII gunto! Desirable simply depends on your taste. The dark, wooden, textured saya are more artsy and took more time to make, therefore cost the officer more for it. But on the market? Haven't followed pricing trends of one vs the other. 1 Quote
