Hi, brand new to the forum. Have lurked previously. I know there are tons of these post.

I recently got my first nihonto, it's mumei, I'm just looking for a little validation and info on how to date this properly, where to start and even if this could be tracked to region or maker. Thanks for your time and all advice or info is appreciated.

And the rest...

It looks to me like the habaki and shirasaya may not be original to the blade, unless I'm unaware of poor fitting after decades or centuries of being in storage. The geometry just seems a little off. It's in old polish and looks really nice in hand but tons of little scratches show up in the pics.

Hi AJ,

welcome to the NMB forum!

Please sign all posts at least with a first name and an initial, so we can address you politely.

The images are not helping a lot to say much about the blade. We could speculate about the shape of the KISSAKI which has an unusual curve and looks strange to me. The NAKAGO has an "old" look, but that does not mean much; there are cases of heavy corrosion even on more recent blades.

Usually, the SHIRA-SAYA keeps its shape even after a long time, so in your case, it may be indeed that the HABAKI is not original to the blade and prevents a perfect fit.

Agreed that the kissaki looks like an odd hybrid shape.  I wonder if this is related to reshaping following some damage (an edge chip) near the kissaki.

Hi and welcome to the NMB forum!

+1 to unusual look of Kissaki. Not sure if it is due to pictures, but I can see Yokote on left (Omote) side, but not so clear on right (URA) side (more like NaginataNaoshi).

Current polish/pictures aren't also helping in seeing Boshi.

Nakago looks Ubu, with a lot of corrosion, but patina looks not that old (or chemically enhanced). Difficult to say from pictures. I can't see any Yasurime.

Can you see/show Yakidashi? Shape of Nakago reminds me Mino school but that is just uneducated guess ;)

Hi AJ,

I hope I'm wrong but, from the photographs it looks like the true line of the hamon runs rather lower than the upper edge of the hadori and might get dangerously close to the edge in the kissaki. As has been said above the point may have had a radical reshape as it looks like the sort of blade that doesn't normally have a yokote - shobu zukuri or, as Adam mentions, naginata naoshi.

Again, I hope I'm wrong but some better pictures might help - often a darkened room with a single point of light can bring out the detail in the blade for photography.

That's for reply guys! I'm gonna try and take much better pics this weekend.

I can say that the hamon is much more visible on one side than the other, and is consistent along the entire edge to the tip.
