Navy Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 Hello to you all; could you experts please take a look at this sword? Should be a Kaneshige one, made in (february?) 1942, correct? I've seen posted here a similar sword, from the same smith but made in '44. The mei looks identical. Thanks in advance. 2 1 Quote
Kiipu Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 ☆ 濃州住金重 = ☆ Nōshū-jū Kaneshige. 名 = Nagoya Army Arsenal final inspection mark above the date. 昭和十九年二月日 = 1944 February. 1 1 Quote
mecox Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 I wonder if this could be Kinju (Kinju, Nishimura) ( there are also several Kaneshige) 1 Quote
Navy Posted January 28 Author Report Posted January 28 Thanks gentlemen; I didn't notice the Na stamp: is it correct for a RJT blade to bear it? With feb '44 on the nakago, now this sword is the twin of the one posted some time ago: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/45532-grandfathers-sword/#comment-472091 1 Quote
Kiipu Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 Mal, I assumed it was Nishimura Jin'ichi 西村仁一. The characters 金重 can be pronounced as either Kaneshige or Kinjū. Historically, both pronunciations were used in Mino Province. I opted to go with the pronunciation as used by Sesko. 1 Quote
lonely panet Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 The kissaki has the yokote but the boshi looks thin. A trait of the smith or repair?? 1 Quote
Navy Posted January 29 Author Report Posted January 29 Hi Hamfish. While waiting for better pics of the blade, I found a couple of the sword posted by Doc/Paul linked above. The shape of kissaki appears different, but the thin boshi seems to be there. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 The RJT list on Japaneseswordindex.com lists 4 Kaneshige, none of which are in Sesko's list, and that list doesn't show the kanji used by them. Like Thomas said, this one is in Sesko's list: KANESHIGE (金重), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Gifu – “Kaneshige” (金重), real name Nishimura Jin´ichi (西村仁一), born July 15th 1902, he worked as rikugun-jumei-tōshō and died April 28th 1982 I checked his section on Kinju, same spelling, and while there are several, he doesn't list any in the showa era. So, I have 3 others with this same mei, and I've logged them as Kaneshige as well. Nice sword, Marzio! Can I get a shot of the fittings for the files too? 1 Quote
Navy Posted January 29 Author Report Posted January 29 Hi Bruce! Thanks for your inputs. About the fittings, I have some but not really Hi Res... Waiting for some more detailed pics. Quote
mecox Posted January 29 Report Posted January 29 @Bruce Pennington @Navy I am aware of the various Kaneshige smiths but for the record with Nishimura I note that Jinsoo Kim (in Steins Sword Index) reads him as Kinju. Very little info on him. I prefer this reading, but need to ask the smith how he reads it. 金重 (Kinju) 西村 仁一 1 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted January 30 Report Posted January 30 Good catch, Mal. Didn't occur to me to check JSI Showa list on that spelling. If we called it Kinju, then we'd simply have another RJT smith not found on the lists, but that's not the first time it's happened. Marzio, those shots are great, thanks! 1 Quote
