Mark Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 A friend bought a sword that is not signed but has a "Hot Stamp". It is a hirazukuri katana with wild gunome/chogi. It is well made and i would guess late shinshinto or gendai. My friend is trying to idendify the maker. Has anyone seen this stamp before? Thanks Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 My eyes let me down sometimes even with cheaters, but, that isn't a stamp is it? That is a hot forge welded seal of some sort, coming out from the nakago not recessed, right? Never saw one that I can recall. John Quote
Mark Posted January 30, 2010 Author Report Posted January 30, 2010 must be the camera but it is stamped into the steel Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 That is one hell of an optical illusion then!! No kakihan/ kokuin in my books match. John Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Morning All, Turn the image 180 degrees and the cameo becomes intaglio. (The illusion is a simple case of higher - level cognitive patterning) Can't help with the stamp though. Cheers Malcolm Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 I tried that Malcolm and it still looks like that rock formation that looks like a face on Mars. Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Hi John, All I can suggest is to keep looking at the 180 reversed image, perhaps sweeping the eyeline from 45 degrees left through right. It should reverse to make an intaglio, but sometimes you have to "encourage" the flip in the illusion to occur. (I have to own up to being a child of the 60's and weaned on a heady mixture of Escher & Vasarelly.....) Cheers Malcolm Quote
Brian Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 OT, I know...but I had to turn it 180 degrees too, to see it as impressed. Wierd illusion. Now I can see it as indented, but no idea what stamp it is. Brian Quote
Mark Posted January 30, 2010 Author Report Posted January 30, 2010 Brian thanks for fixing the picture. it looks better. I am hoping someone on the list may own, or remeber a sword with this stamp that was signed, worth a try Quote
Brian Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Am I the only one that sees the logo for the industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten? Brian Quote
Mark Posted January 30, 2010 Author Report Posted January 30, 2010 Brian Ha-ha... actually the stamp is the other way, he circle is at the bottom Quote
doug e lewis Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 john may be on to something the sword was forged by Martians who secretly visited Nippon in the mid-Kamakura Era, and taught secret sword forging techiques to Masamune. doug e Quote
tagonagy Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 The stamp sort of looks like the one Asano Kanesane uses. Here is a link about him. http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/kanezane.htm Quote
Mark Posted February 2, 2010 Author Report Posted February 2, 2010 Kanezane's stamp has 4 clear points and the one i am working on has smooth edges Quote
Gabriel L Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 The brain assumes light comes from the sky, not the ground. That's the basis of this illusion. Quote
drbvac Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 Well I think it looks like a little man with a head-dress on - never seen any stamp like it ! Quote
