Iaido dude Posted January 22 Author Report Posted January 22 Having a blade made to fit the koshirae seems to be quite doable, but I will sit tight for now. For $7K, I would sooner buy an excellent Nihonto katana or an important tsuba masterpiece from the Momoyama or Early Edo periods. I have seen this website before. Thanks for your help. Quote
Iaido dude Posted January 25 Author Report Posted January 25 This tachi koshirae on Aoi Art auction is very similar to mine: https://sword-auctio...4270-tachi-koshirae/ Quote

Iaido dude Posted January 25 Author Report Posted January 25 Yes, I agree with you Colin. It appears modern and with the same construction material and style as mine. I was surprised that the starting bid was so high. Could this really be the going rate? Quote

There are quite a few cropping up on ebay (described as “vintage” -whatever that means) and mostly they don’t sell either. Make great display pieces though. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted January 25 Report Posted January 25 From memory the best Tachi mounts made today cost several million Yen to create. Quote
Iaido dude Posted January 25 Author Report Posted January 25 Thanks, gentlemen. Mine is thought to be Showa era. It is a family heirloom. I just happened to stumble on that Aoi Art tachi kosirae while looking at tsuba. 1 Quote
Iaido dude Posted January 26 Author Report Posted January 26 Here's another Jauce auction item with more historical significance and elaborate ceremonial grandeur. https://www.jauce.com/auction/1160871811 Quote

I don't know enough about this type of fancy koshirae to know if thats a red flag or not. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 These Efu Tachi were made for significant persons in court for the coronation ceremonies of Emperor Taisho, and Emperor Showa. A variety of Gendai smiths made the special Tachi, including Gassan Sadakatsu, Miyamoto Yoshichika, Naohiro, and Takahashi Nobuhide. The example listed above was likely made for the Taisho coronation. Given these were made for such an auspicious and important occasion, the best artisans of the time would've made the Tachi & Koshirae with the utmost respect and diligence. 3 Quote
KungFooey Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 That is a beautiful tachi koshirae and a lovely family history to go with it!!! You're getting a lot of great advice on this thread and I would tend to side with those suggesting having a blade specially made. True, you probably will eventually come across an antique that fits your koshirae - but lining up the mekugi ana will be something else. You really don't want to have to drill through an antique nakago (although it was often done in the past). Dee Quote
Iaido dude Posted January 28 Author Report Posted January 28 Thanks, Dee. I think that if I were inclined to invest in a sword for this koshirae, I would have a gengaito made to fit it. 2 Quote
