chi fan wong Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 i know nothing about tsuba or tosogu in general. got this naomichi as part of a wak. anything worth noting about this maker? thanks for any information. Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 14 Report Posted January 14 One here with what looks to be the same signature. https://www.ebay.com/itm/326306514750 The Kao is a little hard to see. One in the Met - very plain, no Kao that I can see. https://www.metmuseu...lection/search/30094 may well be a different person. AI says: Naomichi Naomichi was the first maker's name used by Tango no Kami Kanemichi, a swordsmith from Settsu province (modern-day Osaka). His birth name was Mishina Yoshiheibei. I wonder what happened to this area on your tiger example? Was there an inclusion in the iron? Doesn't look like "normal" corrosion as it is only in the one spot 1 Quote
chi fan wong Posted January 16 Author Report Posted January 16 thanks for the info guys. dale, i didnt even notice that corrosion pit. yeah it does look. localized and not part of the general rusting. ilil have to shine a light there and look more carefully. the kao on my tsuba is also quite unclear. would anyone know what school he belongs to? on this website : https://tosogu-antiques.com/horses/ it has one with similar mei and kao and dates it to 1800-1850 but no other information regarding it. again, thanks for your help. Jack Zacao Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 I assume this is the guy, but I do not really understand the description, you need to use AI to translate it. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 Naomichi, (real name) Soda Matabei, used the 'Go' Nyudo Michinao, moved from Kyoto to live in Osaka. Around Koka period. Carved (chiseled) his own work.(?) PS I don't think even AI would be able to read that old style Japanese (yet), but I'd love to be proved wrong! 1 Quote
chi fan wong Posted January 16 Author Report Posted January 16 thank you jack and piers. so it seems like this guy was not from any school in particular and was self taught? Quote
cdrcm12 Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 Would you class Naomichi as a member of the Ichinomiya school, being the son and student of Ichinomiya Norinao? Quote
