parfaitelumiere Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 Hello, I have this nice set, but I don't know about the maker or school. It's signed. The dragon is definitely not the goto style, but several other schools sometimes have such eyebrow and tusks. I was thinking about Ishiguro school as I remember having seen a bit same way to carve heads. Quote
Jack Zacao Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 There appears to be three artists with the same name in history. One indeed belongs to Ishiguro school, he studied under 石黑政広 or his student. However, to be sure, you need to study the Kao, I have no reference book to check for you. Quote
parfaitelumiere Posted January 13 Author Report Posted January 13 Sorry to ask, what is Kao? If I understand correctly, it's a specific way of writing the signature, in this case it needs to find similar signature on other pieces, then be able to determinate from existing data?! I took better pictures, without dust. I also forgot to put back the shitodome. Quote

CSM101 Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 I could only find one pair. Seems so that the quality is not good enough for Ishiguro. Quote
Jack Zacao Posted January 14 Report Posted January 14 CSM101, the one you found is by another artist, the last character is different, although their pronunciation is the same. Quote
CSM101 Posted January 14 Report Posted January 14 I know, that this i s an Ishiguro Masatsune. But you can compare the quality and you can see that there is usually an "Ishiguro" in the signature. Quote
DirkO Posted January 14 Report Posted January 14 According to the signature 政長 , several options: - Kikuchi school - Tsuji school - Yasuda school Yasuda (安田) school seems improbable - they usually applied nanako and almost never signed their work, also working for the bakufu their designs tend to be more formal. Kikuchi (菊池) school or Tsuji (辻) school - could be any of these looking at the style and design. Quote
parfaitelumiere Posted January 14 Author Report Posted January 14 Thanks a lot for your replies, I will dig on the internet with those informations. For now the only exact same signature I found is a shibuichi tsuba with various metals, and if I understand correctly the signature the author would be 菊池政長, even the kao is a bit different, maybe it could make a good match?!
