parfaitelumiere Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 Hello, I recently obtain that tsuba, from a friend. I wanted to know more about it. I was thinking about some higo work, but I would like to know more. The theme is some grave stone(?!)with gold numome, spider and web made from hirazogan, on wooden pattern, with a large numome rim. The size is 86x83mm The thickness is 5mm on the rim and about 3mm on seppa dai. 4 Quote

I've seen quite a few different Higo school tsuba with similar (but never identical) spider and web designs. Quote

One way is Google reverse image search if you want to find the origins of a particular image on the internet, but Dale's real superpower is being able to see a new photo of a tsuba and connect it in his mind to a similar and/or identical example in some abstract catalogue book somewhere! https://sites.google.../reverse-images/home 1 Quote
SteveM Posted January 22 Report Posted January 22 Spider web and tree trunk is an often-used design. Here is a thread with more info 2 Quote

GRC Posted January 26 Report Posted January 26 Sorry to say, but everything about that tsuba is Shoami, not Higo. To my knowledge, there aren't any examples of Higo tsuba with this carved wood bark effect. The nunome on the mimi and the hitsu-ana are definitely not Higo. Yes, there are some late Jingo tsuba with spiders on them, but they look dramatically different to this. If I had to to pick a group, i would suggest Aizu-Shoami. Hope that helps. Quote

This is something I was wondering about but didn't have the confidence in my knowledge to raise in the thread... Every Higo school spider tsuba I have ever seen has had an iron base and usually gold adornment. For example: https://varshavskyco...collection/tsu-0206/ I've seen several of these of varying quality, but never one with a different base or a wood grain effect. 1 Quote
parfaitelumiere Posted January 27 Author Report Posted January 27 Thanks a lot, I was thinking about Higo because of large mimi with nunome, which I saw on several higo on the web, but if some people think it can be a different school, thanks a lot for your help. 1 Quote
