Bruce Pennington Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 I know I've seen one of these lately but cannot find the discussion. Here is an old blade in WWII fittings. Mumei, but with the Tokugawa mark. Found at this Collectors Armory California sale site. Odd that it's mumei and odd placement on nakago Quote
moriarty Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 Perhaps a stamp? Curious piece indeed Quote
KungFooey Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 I think the mon is carved but, because the tang was shortened, its upper profile was changed and so cut off the side of the engraving. Dee Quote
Grey Doffin Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 Perhaps this sword is wanting us to believe it is by one of the Yasutsugu, who sometimes added the mon to their signatures. However, execution and placement relative to the original mekugi-ana are questionable. A possible gimei? Grey 1 Quote
Brian Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 Can't see any smith deliberately adding the mon so offset, and we can't even think of the nakago being altered, as the mekugi ana show center placement as Grey pointed out. Quote
robinalexander Posted December 29, 2024 Report Posted December 29, 2024 Is this it Bruce ? @Bruce Pennington Quote
