Very nice... apologies i cannot really answer what you are after, but I can provide an example which has very similar tendril inlay, similarly 'lined' tagane ato (if that is what it is), and potentially made of the same material (in different states of patina).

I must also say, the nanako on your example is quite interesting the way it allows for the inome... and then kind of forms a namban-esque seppa dai shape.... pretty cool

Kantei is always a great thing to do! Your tsuba, Steve, reminds me of a Nara Arichika tsuba with a very similar tadpole design (but without fukurin and zogan).

 

I would attribute both tsuba to Mito tradition, however. The nanako of the first tsuba does not look like Gotō nor anything the Yokoya and succeeding schools would have made. It does fit into the Mito box, however. And the design also looks quite Mito-like to me.

Well I have no idea what school or maker your guard comes from but I think I can say what the kanji decoration means.
