He-gassen Kozuka

First time i'm seeing it on a kozuka.. or any Japanese sword part. Imagen someone making a full koshirae in this theme

Very funny, never saw such before. Seems a collector piece, not for real use.
Also nice the scene on the back. People eat obviously onions - to take part in the competition?

 

The costumes suggest an early period, but of course the Kozuka was made around late Edo.

Any idea about the signature?

Its an aficionado's piece...  Gave me one helluva chuckle once I worked out that it wasn't a battlefield scene!!  The shtik above also gave me a series of loud chuckles - a stick, a twig, a branch...  Wonderful exchange.
