Yes, I'm proud to take things seriously. Nihontö requires a lot of work for people to understand and appreciate all it has to offer. Collector and connoisseur are not synonymous.
By way of example, describe to me how to tell the difference between a ko-itame and a tight ko-itame.

I've never been a hypocritical false modesty, I know what I'm worth and above all I know that I don't know a lot of things, you'll never see me talk about tsuba or other fushi-kashira because my knowledge of this subject is largely insufficient to be credible (Some people should think about that, whatever the subject).

I'd truly like to see one of your swords jacques - they must be amazing!

What do you collect personally?

Knowledge above all, I'm not materialistic, I'm not interested in owning swords, and in any case I don't have the means for my ambitions. I have a small collection of knives, built up over 40 years ago, and I quickly realized how useless collecting was for me.

Must be strange for someone coming to a forum just looking for help and end up there being a debate about whats ok or not to collect.

It does not bother me, he can't help it that he's born in France, most blunt people in Europe. Thanks for the resonse, I've learned a lot in a few days.

Sorry, wrong picture. This ist the Rai Kunimitsu tachi - Kokuho. Signed. flawless, two holes, ubu.

And by the way: if you want a flawless Rai, then the blade is either tokubetso juyo, bunkazai or above when signed. Unsigned: juyo or bijutsuhin.

Welcome to the NMB aka the AWJMB "Arguing With Jacques Message Board", as you'll see, his attitude often attract controversies.

But please, no need to offend innocents ones, Jacques behaviour only commits himself. And is not a norm here in France.

Many Frenches here will be pleased to help you if they can.

Best regards.

I've finally taken the plunge and blocked Jacques. I've long suspected that his contributions to NMB are fairly masturbatory so I'm sure he'll continue to have fun by himself.

Gentlemen,

Christmas is coming, we should all be more kind :).

I have read many posts of Jacques and first of all I thank him as many others on the forum for his contribution, it is always taken for granted to have an answer for me it is not so ...

my work generally leads me to always grasp the positive aspects of the various characters, I agree that sometimes his answers go beyond the limit (Often without reason) and can be considered offensive especially for newcomers but for me his vision that may seem narrow and elitist and his obstinacy in always looking for a counter-proof is still praiseworthy and useful also to deepen the issues, everyone here expresses his point of view and knowing the way of thinking of a person also helps to contextualize his opinion and to relate it to your own according to different criteria, also I personally don't judge anyone in relation to the blades they keep... if you only buy Juyo it means you have money to buy them, not that you are an expert.

Even in this post his answer is rude but ultimately not wrong, this is not a piece that should be bought... but personally I think that we should always think of people who want to keep an antique / original piece for display useful for conversation without other intentions.

From this point of view the price paid (Seen on another site) is lower than the cost of the tamahagane needed to make the blade... not the deal of the century but it's not a tragedy either...

personally I prefer that these pieces are lived rather than rusting in some cellar.

@Benjamin

Just for fun my last interaction with a potential French customer:

Me: Hello Sir can I help you?
Customer: Oui
Me: Excuse me Sir do you speak English?
Customer: yes but I don’t want to speak English
Me:

What I say only concerns me, and then people can do what they want with it, which isn't my problem. What I don't like is when people refute me without providing any facts, and there are plenty of people for that.

Some more measurements Nakago 65 mm thick, blade runs to 41 mm thick. Its a small blade: 245mm.

Gave  the blade some TLC and applied some  choji oil on it. Now waiting for a nice stand.

There are a lot of silly, redundant questions and questions about horrible blades posted for discussion here on this forum every day.

Jacques has been here to answer them in his unique and not very sociable style for a long time now.

You can ignore him, if you want to, but his theoretical knowledge is worth listening to.

I wish he could find a less confrontational language in his posts, but then, he is who he is.

Better listen to an angry, honest voice than to the ignorants and the crooks everywhere.

This (arguably unimportant) topic has been dead for a month. Beginners do tend to have crappy blades and many questions.

Don't like it - put up a good blade of your own.

You're not in a position to give orders, Rivkin.

Your and Jacques presence is limited to barging into discussions with zero knowledge, zero contribution. Only grand statements that people are "doing it wrong".

Want to be taken seriously - contribute. Write a good article, a book, can't do that - at least put some nice blade of your own out, or learn basics about understanding blades - and demonstrate those with good, on the subject arguments.

Its really not that difficult to begin, and it is really more interesting to do than chasing after people who "post wrong".

Everyone plays their part, and I welcome even those vague "hints" that are meant to make us research further.
Enough of the personal attacks. I for one am very glad Reinhard is taking the time to post. Drop the subject now.

So I guess from now on you are going to reign in your friends and their "silly" "moronic" name calling?

There is an arrogance with some people here that believe they are a fountain of knowledge that we all need. we don't.

People collect whatever swords they collect and there are already resources such as books, the internet and willing and friendly folks that assist without making a big deal.

Been here many years now and from time to time notice the subtle knowledgeable folks that pop in on occasion. There are number of such folk that come here, folks like Jussi that give opinion and share useful data, others that obviously know what they are talking about but stay in the background.

At a point now where im not big on learning much more, know what i need to know. In that respect wont bat an eyelid at blocking anyone who stands on a soapbox and comes across as an A-hole. If i want to know more with regards a future purchase then like anyone here, i can do that myself.

Some people talk like they are a dealer in Tokyo that have handled thousands of swords from many many schools, its embarrassing.

Rein it in, you know who you are.

Personally, never learned anything from such a person, that's a fact.

What is silly to some is not silly to others.
What is a redundant question is not redundant to the person asking it.
Surely the point of a Forum is to help and educate everyone especially those trying to make a start in this hobby. What is a horrible blade is also quite probably someones  first sword bought with great excitement. The reaction he gets here and how that reaction is delivered could either encourage him or break his spirit.
Going forwards this hobby needs all the new blood it can get…..they are the ones who will buy our collections when we leave the planet.
…and of course it’s not compulsory to read or reply to topics that are below your pay grade.

We all started somewhere.

Ivo, give over. As Colin stated, we all start somewhere and learn. All the best for New Year.

Remember that there are those that are not in the naïve fan club.

Good guys have been put off, and always room for return, which one day i hope they do.

Just to add. Sometimes folks go on about the quality of swords brought forward to NMB but the show goes on with or without them.

We all saw something brought to the NMB the other day that basically blows out of the water what any collector has here, quite refreshing and speaks more words than i can.

People can over estimate their own importance, as always.

You are confusing Insta with NMB.

I do not mean to disparage anything shown here in the slightest — there has indeed been an exceptional blade that was recently, and very generously, shared here.

But, in all honesty, I think you are selling some of the collections of your fellow NMB members rather short.

Lots of people here talk the talk, just nice to see someone walk the walk.

Also extremely kind of them to share their collection from time to time.

As said, some folks here moan that all we see is junk and there is never ever any good stuff.

Well, there you are, good stuff.

People should be able to present quality items here without a running commentary that ruins it.

To me, just comes across as envy and i wish they would just shut up and go and read a book or something.
