Paul Martin always gives out great interviews. However I do think Japan as a high cost of living country has the problem where it is tough to make it in crafts profession, as you can get crafts from low cost of living countries for lot cheaper. Swordsmiths here in Finland face similar problem, they will have to price their work quite high in order to make a living. However the consumer can get the sword from Eastern Europe, China, India etc. for much lower cost.

I am not sure how much demand there is for new modern swords in Japan? In the modern world swords don't break that often and martial arts practicioners who use swords are quite small group. And there are the second hand modern swords that can get passed down and resold.
