Thanks for you help other pictures: Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 The one if a name may be 大夫 Hiroo, Tayu, Daibu, Dayu, but if it is a title means 'high steward'. The other is 'Showa' as you say. I do not know what 大夫 really means here. John Quote
Grey Doffin Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 I think it says, "Made yesterday in China." Grey Quote

John A Stuart Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 I was curious where these images come from and went to the URLs on the photos. It seems to be an Spanish auction site and is fraught with the same kind of militaria found on e-Bay. lots of repros and fantasy stuff. here is an example page. galsmark Posted January 18, 2010 Author Report Posted January 18, 2010 Is this a fake?? If you are sure, i'm goin to reclaim to my seller... Quote

Bazza Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 galsmark said: Is this a fake?? If you are sure, i'm goin to reclaim to my seller... No doubt whatsoever it is a fake. I didn't have the heart to be the first cab off the rank with what is undoubtedly extremely disappointing news for you. Buy books, look around a lot - Shows, Museums, other collectors, join clubs and groups - and save your money until you know a lot more. I doubt there isn't a person on this Board who hasn't bought unwisely early in his or her collecting life. If I could say just this - don't beat yourself up over it if there were otherwise no guarantees in the description and familiarise yourself with the Latin phrase caveat emptor... Regards, BaZZa. galsmark Posted January 18, 2010 Author Report Posted January 18, 2010 could i tell the seller... IT'S A FAKE MADE IN CHINA ??? i'm very discontent... What is the price just for a Tanto (WWII)?? Thanks very much for the help (for all) Quote
Stephen Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 we need to know how it was stated in the auction, wording is everything, if stated ww2 tanto then you can and should get your money back, if just like knife or tanto...it might be a push. Quote

John A Stuart Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 The seller mentions that it comes with a signed worksheet. It would be interesting to see that. Still 125 euro tough to lose. John Quote

BRUNROX Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Greetings all, "Hoja firmada" stands for "Signed Blade" ("Hoja" has the double meaning of "Sheet" as in paper, or "Blade" ) I think the seller was not hiding anything in his listing. Sorry. Mario P. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 It could have been made in China (most likely), Pakistan, Thailand, maybe Spain, maybe some place else, but not in Japan. Grey Quote
Ted Tenold Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 I want to caution folks about returns of items like this. If you do approach the seller for a return, do so in a civil and humble manner. I have seen some of these things acquired by folks who know little, *from* folks who know little, and the seller may have taken things on just as much faith as the buyer did. Some of these items may get traded about quite a bit before crossing the path of someone who finally brings some truth of origin to the piece taking everyone by surprise. So before you go back to a seller all puffy chested and , take a deep breathe and go back calm and collected. How the seller deals with it thereafter will define their moral fiber and merit of character. Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 Even giving your opinion on something can cause trouble. A few years ago I mentioned that a particular item on e-Bay was a reproduction, in polite terms. One day later I got an irate phone call from the husband of the seller. He phoned from the deep south and it must have been expensive long distance, he went up and down me with no pity about how I was libeling his wife and trying to ruin her business. Since then I am more reticent to comment on the legitimacy of anything in public. When it comes to cold hard cash, some people get even colder and harder. John Quote

Bazza Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 I've been out for an appointment and while driving thought about this problem facing "galsmark". We have been so concerned for him that we collectively forgot to read him a prime rule of the Board - PLEASE SIGN YOUR NAME... So, this Euro125 tanto is about $200 Australian. Dear "galsmark", I assure you if you stay collecting Japanese swords this is a mere drop in a bucket. A few days ago I bought a book from Craig Harris' generous 50% off sale for $290 Australian dollars. A BOOK!!! The only thing sharp about that deal was my wife's tongue for throwing more money into my bottomless pit of collecting... This so that I might be able to learn something about my three (THREE) fuchi signed YASUCHIKA. I guess my library over the decades of collecting has cost me at least $20,000 Aussie dollars. To look at your issue another way, you have bought a book for Euro125. It said "This is a gimei/not real tanto". This knowledge is priceless as you have bought through experience, and it will continue to do so, but better to buy real books first. I said to a beginning collector recently "spend your first $2,000 on books". I also commented that collecting Japanese swords is sure to cost you grief and money!!! But O, the joy of a good find, and the fabulous friends one makes on the journey. My Dear "galsmark" san, you have joined the club... Best regards for your future endeavors, Barry Thomas. Quote
