Advice for applying oil

What is the best material for applying oil? Is there a particular material that works better than others?

Microdear cloths are often mentioned as the best, but most any microfiber cloth (a lense-cleaning cloth) will do.

I use plain unscented tissues. Cheap, easy to buy and you don´t need to wash them.

As I noted in a previous post, there is some risk of micro-scratches with tissue, since it may contain abrasive particles, due to how it is produced.  My caution on this front is for the same reason that I would never use tissue on a camera lens.
