Bold design and excellent iron. The quintessential  Sado Island  tsuba, Provenance Robert Haynes.

It can best be described by Robert Haynes himself, with quote borrowed from Elliott Long's excellent site and resource, "Shibui Swords".

$650  shipped

Allow me to chime in.

As you know, I do not recommend tsuba indiscriminately. I do it only in cases where the tsuba is exceptional. Now, this is such a case.

Unlike so many other schools, Sado Island masters have retained true martial spirit in their work even in the "weak piping time of peace" that was the mid Edo period.

I know that John's photography does not do the tsuba justice. and that it looks much better in hand. What I see here is excellent iron and a very dynamic motif that makes this massive tsuba anything but plain or boring. This is the work of a true master.

Needless to say, that if Mr Haynes stated that this work is rare, then that's what it is.

A great opportunity to purchase an exceptional tsuba for what I see as a great price.

Hi Johnny,

You should include the measurements.

Sado Island tsuba are often robust nice tsuba akin to 3rd gen Akasaka.

Given the mines and the shipping there, the iron is often harder and richer in a cold earthy way than Akasaka iron.

Very distinct.

They are outside the Pantheons of Higo, Owari, and Ko-Goto/Ko-Mino that interest me most,

but they have a tactile appeal to them that is very pleasant to me.

[edit:  ah, I see that Haynes already mentioned the hefty circa third gen Akasaka aspect.]

Hello Grev,

Thank you very much for your kind words. Indeed, John was gracious enough to sell the tsuba to me. I’m really looking forward to it in Germany and will report in, once it arrives.

Best,

Danny

Dear all,

I am happy to report that the Sado island tsuba arrived safe and sound. To mirror Marius´s words: in person, the tsuba is ven more of a joy to behold and very pleasing to eye and hand.

John has been a pleasure to deal with. This purchase has been one of my most pleasureable experiences in my time collecting.

Best,

Danny
