Eric Santucci Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Greetings, Hoping to get some identification assistance for Horikawa Kunitoki – supposedly an early Edo period sword student of Horikawa Kunihiro. I am unable to find any reference to this smith in Sesko’s Masters of Keicho Shinto amongst the Kunihiro information, nor the e-Index of Japanese Swordsmiths. I do see other Kunitoki smiths, but those do not reference Kunihiro nor the proper early Edo time period (assuming early 1600s – 1620 or thereabout). There is one online sales source I have been able to hit for him (Wakeidou), but not much to go on there. I am either getting too old or missing something obvious amongst the research. 😊 Either way, I extend my request to each of you for any assistance. Many thanks, Eric Quote
Yumso Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 https://iidakoendo.com/3140/ https://wakeidou.com/pages/624/ Found 2 sites, think the first one gives better info about the swordsmith himself. 1 Quote
tom Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Hi Eric, Kunitoki Horikawa was a student of Kunihiro Horikawa, who is considered the founder of the Shintō period, having trained such outstanding apprentices as Kuniyasu Horikawa, Kunisyu Echigo-Mamoru, Kuniji Dewa-Osumi and Masahiro Osumi. Kunitoki is thought to have been a swordsmith who was a stand-in for Kunihiro, as few of his works have survived. Few pieces of Kunitoki inscriptions remain, making it a valuable source of information. So if you find a Blade from him, thats rare. Tom 1 Quote
