An Autumnal "Koetsuguro" Raku Guinomi by Hideki Yanashita

Had a buyer lined up for this one but they were unable to complete the purchase, back in the block as a result. 

 

On offer today is a fabulous sake cup by one of the most accomplished contemporary potters working in the Raku style. Hideki Yanashita trained under the legendary Sugimoto Sadamitsu before going out on his own and creating masterpieces that are true extensions of their Momoyama ancestors. 

 

This cup is in a form popularized by Koetsu, who used a variant for his famous "Kaga" chawan. Instead of red like that bowl, this one is dark and moody, which the artist calls "Koetsuguro".  The Shigure, or drizzle, pattern beautifully incised on the body completing the mood. You can feel the rain through this piece, perfect for warm sake. 

 

Measures 7.6cm wide by 5.5cm tall. 

 

Brand new and never used, complete with its original box, cloth and paperwork.
