RyanHust Posted October 17 Report Posted October 17 Hi there! I recently purchased a katana with parts that contain shunga motif. It seems like the parts are a copy, but upon removing the tang the kanji seem to indicate that this blade was made made in 1944 « showa 19 by a smith called Kojima Kazaharu or Kojima Kazuji. Got this translation from Chat Gtp. Can anyone help me with the translation and verify that this is indeed a blade from a gunto or if it a replica of some sort?! Many thanks! Regards Ryan Quote
RyanHust Posted October 20 Author Report Posted October 20 Thank you for your replies. As a newbie I would like to know how to spot fake from real nihonto. In this specific case is it because of the kanji or lack of yokote line on the kissaki? Quote
raaay Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Ryan , sorry but it is basically everything about the sword that is wrong , especially the mounts and the tang and the kanji and etched Hamon . 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Hi Ryan, Like the Treasury Dept detectives that study the real money so that when the fake shows up, they recognize it right away, your best defense is to spend time looking at the real thing. You can start, for free, on Ohmura's excellent site: http://ohmura-study.net/900.html. 65+ pages of pristine Japanese swords. You'll find as you go through, he posts several nakago with mei, that you can compare to the sword in this thread. You can also peruse the various threads here at NMB for examples of nakago and real hamon (temper patterns). The final item I would add to Ray's list is the ito (handle wrap). Japanese always alternate the fold direction of the wrap. Chinese fold it in the same direction across the handle. 1 Quote
RyanHust Posted October 21 Author Report Posted October 21 I guess you live and learn right. Thanks again for valuable tips and helpful insights. Any tips to trusted resellers and and websites who sell authentic nihontos? I live in Norway so any European outlets would be good? 1 Quote
oli Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 have a look in the sale section here on the board. Quote
