Zen Swordsman Posted September 30 Report Posted September 30 Hello and thank you for taking the time to help me. I acquired this sword from an estate sale and was so happy to find the tang signed. I am just exited to find out if this sword is real or fake. If you know much about the sword please tell me everything about it. Cannot decide if I will sell it or refurbish it for my collection as this would be my first authentic sword if it turns out to be real. Thanks agian! Quote
ROKUJURO Posted September 30 Report Posted September 30 Rad, it looks like a sword but it is not of Japanese origin. There are many look-alikes on the market, unfortunately. Hope you did not pay much! 3 Quote

The mounts don't match the workmanship style or quality the Japanese did, even during wartime. The nakago is poorly shaped and the kanji on it are written in such a manner that doesn't evoke confidence. Also, I can see what looks like damascus folding lines in the nakago, so the steel isn't Japanese either. I think this is a recent reproduction/fantasy piece. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 1 Report Posted October 1 The unusual 田野 may be playing with characters. Reverse these two and you get 野田 = Noda The famous early Edo smith. Noda Hankei, also known as Noda Zenshiro Kiyotaka. NB 圭 Kei may also be playing on this same suggestion, sound-wise. 1 Quote

Brian Posted October 1 Report Posted October 1 It's 100% fake, sorry. It isn't so much about identifying what looks fake. It's more about knowing what real ones look like and realizing there is nothing that looks real. This comes from looking at real ones, and spending time identifying what features a real one has. No worries, you'll get there. I bet your next one will be real. Quote
