Just spotted this nagintata that looks like it’s been profoundly abused, by someone welding a bayonet style socket to it allowing it to be bizarrely mounted…never seen the like.

that is an early type of NAGINATA (not  nagintata), called TSUKUSHI (or CHIKUSHI) NAGINATA. There have been similar weapons in Europe as well.

I cannot tell if this is an old original one or (more likely) a later UTSUSHI/copy.

Hi Jonathan ,

 

It was in Sworders auction a couple of months back , maybe it did not reach it's reserve price ?  i see there are few other Japanese items from the previous auction, also  in there next sale .

 

it  has already been  said it is an older style of mounting , IMHO , presumably to give it extra strength when in use , just my two pence worth   .
