I've seen a few photos over the years that seem to show a kaigunto with white same'.  This photo, posted on this Gunboards Thread, is the most clear one I've seen.  What do you guys think? Bright light glaring off shiny black lacquered rayskin?  Family blade with navy saya (cannot see the kabutogane); I have seen one like that before.

I just wonder how much the individual units (pilot in this case) customize their swords as an identifier. In my army unit, we wore Kelly green hats as a unit identifier; the special forces once had green berets, and air force units had distinctive patches. Maybe others in his particular unit had the same?

Wow, John!  A live one!  My first impression based off these shots, was late-war; but after seeing the whole thing, it's got both haikan and upgraded eel-skin saya.  It's just had a rough life.

Looks like shark skin to me Bruce.

 

I have a gut feeling the upgraded 'gold ray' dia seppa may be hiding under that verdigris. Just a feeling.
