Mark,

you can improve the readability of the MEI by showing photos that are:

- well focused, not foggy or blurry
- made with a dark, non reflective background for good contrast
- made with light from the side (may not apply for HAMON photos)
- made from directly above (not at an angle)
- made with correct orientation (vertically tip-upwards, especially NAKAGO photos)
- without HABAKI but showing the MACHI and NAKAGO JIRI
- made in high resolution to see details
- showing details of the blade (magnification) like BOSHI, HAMACHI, HAMON, HADA, NAKAGO JIRI etc.
- presented as cut-outs so very little background is shown

If you cannot supply good photos (..."these photos are all I have from the dealer...."/..."I do not have a good camera but only an old mobile phone...." ), DO NOT POST THEM. They will not be helpful.

神力丸有續作之 = Jinrikumaru Aritsugu made this

Markus Sesko's Swordsmiths of Japan has the following entry:

Quote

ARITSUGU (有続), Genbun (元文, 1736-1741), Settsu – “Sesshū-jū Jinrikumaru Aritsugu” (摂州住神力丸有続),

“Jinrikimaru Aritsugu” (神力丸有続), real name “Takayanagi Shōzaemon” (高柳庄左衛門), son of Kaga no Kami

Sadahiro (加賀守貞広), Settsu-Shimosaka group, he signed first with Kunitsugu (国継), there exists a joint work under

the name of Kunitsugu with his father Sadahiro that is dated Shōtoku one (正徳, 1711) and that bears the information

made the age of 27, notare-midare or an Ishidō-like midareba, wazamono

I can't decipher all of the writing on the other side, but it starts with:

天下太平 = peace and tranquility for the whole world

武運長久 = long-lasting good luck in war

The left side should be

住吉太神宮奉以剱余鉄

Made with steel left over from the making/dedication of a sword for Sumiyoshi Taisha (shrine).

Just a guess maybe a special order sword since he says

peace and tranquility for the whole world

And long-lasting good luck in war

A nice chiseled script

would be nice to see the entire sword

Blade is nothing special.  The inscription just had me stumped.  As I was asked here is a picture. It will be at the MAX show if anyone wants to see it in person
