Hi folks,

so I bought this quite cheaply from a mechanic in Adelaide who found it in a rubbish tip (!) he thought it might have been an officer’s sword souvenir’d from the war as per the common story, but even from my amateur observation parts of it seem to be quite a lot older.

What do we think?

I have a feeling that, the whole sword has been buffed at some time.  The Nakago (Tang), has definitely been buffed.   I believe the signature might be, Kaneuji.  Sorry, I can't make out the date.  My feeling is, Shinshinto.

It's a WWII blade, and has been buffed as David pointed out. You can see the faint remnant of the Sho stamp above the Mei, indicating a non-traditional made blade.

Rob, you've been holding out on me!  Does that one have a date on the other side?

Jon,

Yes, a Showa stamp, and date June 1941.  Nice find!  Amazing how many of these have been saved from the dumpster over the years.
