Cornelius Posted September 3, 2024 Report Posted September 3, 2024 Hello, I searched for the signature from this tsuba through the few works I have on the subject. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything identical. It seems to be about someone whose name starts with "Nobuie" (if I understood correctly). I am a newbie in this field but I am trying to learn as fast and as much as possible. Please, could someone tell me who this signature belongs to? Any suggestion is welcome. Thank you! Quote

Cornelius Posted September 3, 2024 Author Report Posted September 3, 2024 The second sign looks to be different (please see the circle in my photo) from Nobuie 1st and 2nd generations. Thank you! Quote

Thank you! Expand This does not necessarily mean they are from different artists. Artisans would sometimes use alternate kanji when signing works. Hell, some artists would use entirely different surnames altogether at different points throughout their careers! Quote
Geraint Posted September 3, 2024 Report Posted September 3, 2024 Dear Cornelius. I think Yoon has suggested that the signature may bee Nobumitsu rather than Nobuiye. All the best. 1 2 Quote
Cornelius Posted September 3, 2024 Author Report Posted September 3, 2024 I kept looking, but couldn't find anything in the "Nobuie" style that resembles the 3D decoration of my tsuba. What do you think? When could be this tsuba dated? Quote
Cornelius Posted September 3, 2024 Author Report Posted September 3, 2024 Nobumitsu... Yes! It's something else! Thank you very much! Quote
Spartancrest Posted September 3, 2024 Report Posted September 3, 2024 Ebay sale? https://www.ebay.com/itm/156363421734 I have seen the twisted wire inlay "vines" before on a few tsuba but I can't track down those images at the moment - not much help with the signature. Nobumitsu (written: 信光) is a masculine Japanese given name. The kanji look pretty close to me. PS. Mercari has it at half the price of ebay https://jp.mercari.com/item/m48220885862 And please Cornelius saw it first! 1 Quote

Spartancrest Posted September 3, 2024 Report Posted September 3, 2024 I like the London sale 2014 better than the ebay one. 1 Quote
