As the title suggests, this is a sequel to my post a week or so ago about the cool looking gold Meiji Tsuba...

The question is will the seller follow through this time and what price will they fetch this round?

Last time we reached 132,000 yen, gentlemen place your bets!

My bet is it will be pulled at... (name any price below ¥400,000).

Nuh-uh, that's too easy!

Everybody's gotta state a specific value to take part in the game, no easy way-outs!

Based on how the last auction went my bet is 180,000 yen and the seller pulls it again at the last minute!

The seller could be advertising the store, and fishing for individual offers. Is this only the second time it's been offered?

(Oh, and I reckon your 180,000 is pretty close.)

Second time *That I know of*

Consider this a fun game to gauge both the value and the market!

It is s stunning piece of craftsmanship.  My guess is that given this is the second time it has been offered, if it hits 250,000 yen the seller might let it go, although they probably believe it it worth more.

We have another player!

Come on, quickly place your bets while you still can people!

These are described as gold and silver inlay but I’d bet it is just nunome zogan which is not inlay and far easier to do. Opinions??

The same technique used on Satsuma ware ceramics?

No. Satsuma decoration is over-glaze  painting that is then fired, several times for different colours. The gilding on the good pieces is mercurial.

Nunome zogan is thin gold or silver  foil hammered/pressed into a finely cross hatched surface.

300,000 yen and PULLED AGAIN!!!

BIG jump up from the last auction! I don't think anyone quite predicted that increase!

Stay tuned for the inevitable part 3 (series finale?)

Although described as Meiji, I think this  tsuba is brand new. Great skill, knowledge and craftsmanship and a worthy continuation of the innovative processes that were developed during Meiji by the likes of the Komai Co. et al. The use of these vine leaves was indeed a favourite subject used often by Komai mostly as border work in conjunction with silver dot bunches of grapes.

Given the quality, I’d happily own it.
