obiwanknabbe Posted August 20, 2024 Report Posted August 20, 2024 My wife surprised the ever living heck out of me with this amazing birthday gift. An exceptionally wide wakizashi made by Motoyasu. Can anyone tell me more about this maker? Another name perhaps?. I can't seem to find anything about him other than the he was possibly a Satsuma smith. Came with some nice fittings and an iron tsuba signed Mototake. 6 7 1 Quote

Michaelr Posted August 21, 2024 Report Posted August 21, 2024 Kurt, congratulations on both a Great Wife and a Great blade. You are a very lucky person. Place this blade in a place where you can enjoy it every day while thinking about the wife that you have to enjoy it with. I hope you and your wife stay as happy as you are today for the rest of your life. MikeR 5 Quote

Mind you , it was Dry Blackthorn English cider! just no…dry blackthorn is a travesty of nature…it’s a none traditional cider that is no longer made in Somerset…it’s made in Ireland, a nation that has deluded itself into thinking it knows how to make cider…they export the apples from the southwest of England…. In reality if cider is not made in Somerset it’s hardly worth the name ( even traditional ciders)….the sparking none traditional ciders…are the cider equivalent of knockoff Chinese “Nihonto”… If you like cider I can give the addresses of a couple of farms that will probably export. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted August 21, 2024 Report Posted August 21, 2024 Now, I will never say no to a drop of nice, cold dry cider. So throw in a blade like Kurt's above, and the world would be my oyster. 1 1 Quote
The Blacksmith Posted August 21, 2024 Report Posted August 21, 2024 Unfortunately, there are not too many English ciders available over here, usually Blackthorn or Bulmers Hereford cider. Though admittedly, the Blackthorn wasn't as it was when I was living in the UK. The local cider here is really just a sort of fruity, fizzy drink, with such delicacies as , rhubarb, lime, raspbery, chilli, and god knows what other abominations that the locals call 'cider'! As for the possibility of import, well our tax systrem would obliterate that possibility. A friend was sent a bottle of whisky as a birthday present, and the customs kindly charged him £75 import fee ! I have had some nice Kentish ciders too. 2 Quote
Bazza Posted August 23, 2024 Report Posted August 23, 2024 I've just tried to send a bottle of nice Aussie Shiraz to a Wineaholic in the USA. The lovely Post Office Lady said to me "And what are you sending airmail to America?" I replied "A lovely bottle of Aussie Shiraz". She simply replied, knocking me off my feet, "Can't send wine to America." I was astonished. ASTONISHED. But a simple google search showed it was true. My next try will be sending said bottle of Shiraz to Japan. Any advice or clues from the cognoscenti?? BaZZa. 1 Quote
