Collecting Tsuba seems addictive? How many do you have? On how many years?

Oh well my friends,

Let's not go there!

I don't want Brian to lock this great thread!

I am backing out of this discussion!

But like I said, I am happy to have purchased my 151st tsuba!

It should be delivered from Japan in about 2 weeks!

Hurrah!

Does this one have a particular theme?

Posted

My friend Jake,

The tsuba I purchased is just a motif in my collection that I don't have.  It is a spindle thread type theme.

Also, just for your information I would greatly appreciate it if you read my "Tsuba casting molds?" thread.

And then get back to me.

I have endured more hate, put downs, and other such nonesense then most of the members put together on this forum!

No brag, just fact!

Hey, just my opinion!

Oh well, it is what it is!

With respect,

Dan

See Jake,

As you can tell by the above post from 1kinko "Education is not hate.".

This kind of stuff on this forum never stops!

Maybe just better for newer members to go to another tsuba forum!

Just my opinion!

Dan,

Why are you throwing the same 2 year old "Tsuba casting molds" thread in every discussion? Are you a child? Stop playing the victim and move on.

Oh Derek,

Walk in my shoes and then tell me what you think!

A "child"!  I am in my 70's.  Think again!

Again, KMA!

Administrator, what do you think of this?

I already stated that I am backing out of this discussion.

But your members just keep "coming on"!

You know me, I will not back down!

This is a great thread.  Don't lock it becasue of some silly members that just don't get it!

With respect,

Dan

Nothing wrong with cast molded tsuba. Someone could write an entire thesis on the development of cast mold production techniques in medieval Japan, I think it would make for a very interesting read!

What is the exact design of this new one though? Is it an open or closed work? Does it depict anything specific? I am curious!

Will you be adding it to that same thread?

My friend Jake,

Did you read my "Tsuba casting molds?" thread?

I fully appreciate your kind words and your responses to my posts.

But this thread is getting ugly by some unenlightened members, in my opinion!

I don't want Brian to lock it.

So, once again, I am out of here!

Did you read my "Tsuba casting molds?" thread?  I actually have written a book on the subject, including only my posts and thoughts on this thread.

No worries Dan, I have not had the chance to read that thread yet but will definitely take the time to do so in a few hours when I get home.

(Currently at work writing from my phone haha)

I only bought one Tsuba but I’m looking for my 2nd one for some months now.

I’m looking for something close to Hirata Hikozo in copper with odawara Fukurin or a nice Yokoya piece.

That Hirata Hikozo tsuba is really stunning.

...And perfectly highlights how naive I am to judging the quality of a tsuba :rotfl:

I can tell it's very nice. I would never have guessed anywhere near that price!

Back to the books ,
Cheers,
-Sam

- Hi, my name is Mauro and I've been a tsuba addict for 14 years.
- Thank you Mauro for telling us your problem!
- Problem? Which problem...?

All right folks, anyway now I've been astinent for 3 months.
This thread prompted me to rewiew my buying habit about tsuba, and data clearly demonstrate:
1. it's a kind of addiction;
2. I'm improoving in the passing of years;
3. I'm not yet a wise man, but still enjoyng collecting :).

I've been "collecting" on and off for ten years - currently have four, the most at one time was probably eight or so.

Collecting for 15+ years - I've always followed the advice of a far more senior collector - 'collect at the top of your budget' - and I've never had more than 15 pieces, I try to upgrade my collection when I have the opportunity so they will suit my ever changing taste.

A bargain basement Hirata  - not an odawara fukurin [as the seller claims] but a nawame one,  https://www.jauce.com/auction/f1149144492   I honestly don't think it will sell very cheaply but I don't see any papers with it - make of that what you will.  :hijacked:

https://nihonto.com/8-8-19-2/   Very deep pockets ! :)

Close to Hirata Hikozo

Actually this would be perfect but I’m not convinced in investing so much because I’m mainly interested in seeing the workmanship of the Odawara Fukurin and the circular „file marks“.
I would want to sell it afterwards without much lost money if possible and can compromise a lot of condition if some parts are still good.
So I want to own them to study it in depth and then get to the next piece somehow.

Thanks for your efforts and the 2nd piece is also interesting but I’m not sure yet.

Edit: without the odawara Fukurin I won’t be happy, it is definetly a nice looking piece with a beautiful shape and surface but from the pictures the rim appears much thicker then an Odawara Fukurin. Im also not in a hurry and like to see what comes up. There also was a nice yokoya Somin Kozuka at Touken komachi for around 15k€ that is now already sold but I would prefer a Tsuba honestly. Saved the pictures on my computer because interestingly there is a much cheaper Kozuka with the same motif from another artist that clearly shows where the price difference comes from imo.

EDIT 2: Its boring without the pictures but i wonder why they have the pictures of the Somin in a much lower resolution.

Great collection in my opinion.   I spotted your interesting habaki

Thank you, as a proud dumpster diver I traded/bought without papers 95% of it. There are some old continental tsubas that were not on the table.

The habaki is a part of koshirae which comes with two opinions:

1. By "all-American old school shinsa of tsuba and tosogu": in suite mainline Goto, too unusual to be more specific, custom order.

2. By an "honorary Russian shinsa of crafts and blades": a combinations of pieces, all by different Goto makers. Only one piece he identified as early mainline Goto, the rest in his opinion are three (!) different generations of lesser skill.

Here are the detailed examples, unfortunately the o-kozuka did not come out perfectly in focus.
