Matsunoki Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 Some fakes are getting so good now that I begin to doubt far more things. Opinions on this one? Signs of wear to seppadai….but that can be faked as well! From China hence the doubt but it looks very nice quality and I’d normally go very late Edo or more likely early Meiji. They haven't got this good yet have they? If so …..blimey. Quote
thutson Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 Dear Colin, I posted a topic some time ago regarding a near identical casting of this tsuba, which I also could not discern whether it was real or fake, but with help from the forum we identified the signs that I think proved it to be a very impressive modern fake. So I believe the tsuba you present here is also a modern cast from the same mould. Fakes have, unfortuantly, got this good! Best, Tom 1 1 Quote
Matsunoki Posted August 9, 2024 Author Report Posted August 9, 2024 @thutson Thanks Tom….interesting but very scary. Quote
Spartancrest Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 I hate to say it but some of the more modern copies are a far cry from the crude ones made in the 1950s and 60s for practice swords. But you can see the pattern has not changed very much just better quality and a bit more gold paint. still bad ones getting about of course https://www.jauce.com/auction/h1145055901 https://www.jauce.com/auction/f1114842948 Ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/365048053993 expensive for paperweight! Is this the daisho you are looking at Colin? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/405135677910 US $1,299.99 that is an expensive learning experience! 3 Quote

Some of the fuchi kashira were worryingly good as well. A lot of genuine tsuba mixed in. Crafty. many of the repro were described as such but these tsuba were “edo” hence my suspicion that a trap awaited. Nothing gets past you does it?😊😊😊, thankfully!!! Best. Colin Quote

Hey Colin how close are you to Bristol? This Museum could do with some help https://collections....collections/?s=TSUBA especially with their shorthand descriptions [and maybe a tape measure!]. 1 Quote

Spartancrest Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 Somewhere near Norwich? What! That distance is just down the road for us Aussies [heck I live in the smallest state and we drive further than that to take our dog to the vet!] Quote

Quiet life for me nowadays. Remember we only got electricity around here a couple of years ago🙂 2 Quote
